Starter rope question

My boat didn't come with a starter rope. Given the problems I'm currently having getting the motor started I figure it'd be a good idea to have one on hand. I haven't been able to find one at the local boat stores so I'm wondering if I can make my own. I figure it's just a certain length of rope that fits comfortably in the groove, with a knot at one end and a wood handle at the other. Is that pretty much it? Any particular material to use for the rope? Any special knot for the flywheel end? Length?

TIA!

Start with about 2.5 feet of rope and adjust from there...it should fit your arm length and give you enough pull to spin the flywheel a couple of times with a smooth pull. Keep spectators clear of the knot.

I think you'll need at least a 3 footer you need enough so you don't run out of rope before you have useed up your pull stroke.Don't overflow the groove.Pull with both hands and as you get near the end slide your off hand down the rope and catch the knot.
You'll look like a real pro. And you won't crack someone with the end.

And make sure to put on the wooden handle. Heard a story (could be urban myth) about somebody using a rope with just a loop at the end for a handle. Motor started, knot didn't come off, rope wound back up, fingers didn't come out of loop.......

I wouldn't use polypropolene or nylon. They tend to stretch and cause a rubber band effect.

The originals look to be cotton.
