My first boat, been sitting for 3 years

Hey all,

I am about to purchase a 2000 20' Bayliner with a 6cyl for 1k. I think its a pretty good deal, I'm splitting it with my sister and brother in law, so for $500 to have a boat to play around with off the coast of newport beach or take to Havasu or Powell seems like a steal to me.

I haven't looked at it yet but my Dad went and saw it (it's a friend of his, with too much money) and he said structurally it looks great, just some mold on the carpet and the engine might need some hoses/seals.

What do you guys think? I'm thinking about $2000 total for boat, carpet, engine, etc. I'll be doing all of this myself as half the fun of buying this thing is fixing it up. Just want to see if there's anything else I should look at before I commit.

Thanks!

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

As long as there's not Too much Rotten wood down there supporting those Mushrooms,...??...

I'd say you got a Steal of a Deal...

The motor,+ drive are worth Twice what you paid, if they pass muster of course....

That's what I was thinking, if I can get away with putting about $2000 total into it I might be able to use it for a year or two and get my money back. I'm not really worried about the money, just wanted to see if there's anything else I should be looking for.

What's a hose seal job like for a 6cyl? Its been sitting for 3 years with a cover on, but the cover folded in and let water in which is why there's a small magical forest of mushrooms in there ahah.

If that's been Sittin',... It really needs a good going over by a Mechanic,...
Atleast a full Service,+ Check-out...
A launch, run,+ gun could ruin your Geat Deal...

first of all......that is a scremin deal for a grand......if you dont want it i do !

second.......thake that 2 grand budget and throw it out the window !

the old addages........."a boat is a giant hol in the water you throw money into"

and.....Bring Out Another Thousand. is very true.

however the enjoyment is well worth it ! :)

just walk the deck.....feel for soft spots.....but it pretty much doesnt matter with that boat.....as bond-o said.....it is well worth it even if you have to part the boat out !

cheers

Re: My first boat, been sitting for 3 years

I'd want to hear it run first. I looks good, real good for the money. But I'd still want to hear it run. When a boat (especially in an area that had easy access to water) has been sitting up that long there's usually a reason.

Likely the carb will need rebuilding, the floor under the shrooms is likely toast and I see a few other issues with mold that means the boat has been wet for some time.

Even if you can't get it to run because of the carb you can haul a battery out to it and pull the plugs and check the compression. If the motor spins easy and has good compression then that will at least eliminate a few possible future headaches.

Also check the outdrive seal or "boot" as they're called for stiffness or cracking.

I/Os are much more expensive to maintain than OBs and there's much more to go wrong or worry about.

You could likely get your money back out of the outdrive alone and around here a running 4.3 brings 500-750 bucks, another 3-400 for the trailer... so if the engine is running (or will run with a carb re-build) you're way ahead.

IF the floors are rotten you're still ahead this minute but won't be after you tackle that job. I have bought a few boats over the years that had a great drive train and trailer but rotten floors for very low prices and just parted them out.... then either sell the hull as a "project" for a couple hundred bucks or if it didn't sell out came the chainsaw and off to the dump.

I'd go bounce up and down on the shrooms and make sure about the floor before I got too excited about using it for more than a season or two.

Whelp, I think I'm going to pull the trigger on it. I've already been looking for carpet, towers, stereos, props...pffft, $2k, what was I thinking ahah. The tower would cost as much as the boat lol.

Will do, I'll document the entire ripping apart and putting back together and I'm sure I'll be on here with a few questions.

I've been around boats my whole life and my Dad just got rid of his 95 Maxum 26' boat that looked like it did the day he bought it. Cant wait to make this baby look new again!

Thanks for your input!

Re: My first boat, been sitting for 3 years

I've been trying to research as much as I can about this boat, does anyone know where I can find out more about the engine? (4.3 LX GEN+) gas and range? Top speed? Out drive parts, etc?

Google has turned up quite a few things but nothing really specific to this model. Also, how do I tell what year and model it is, I'm thinking its a 98-00 CX, but Im not sure.

Thanks for any help you can offer!:)

Great thanks! I'm lead to believe this boat is a 97 or 98 because it has a 4.3LX Gen+ in it, does that sound correct?

Looks like a great deal. I think you could hit 45 MPH without too much trouble. Man who let a boat go to sh!t that fast? Strange.
