Excuse this type of question!
In the area where I boat there are many fishermen running on chainsaw oil,
saying its higher grade and three times cheaper than the TCW-3, is this bad for the motors?
There is a box at the carburetor intake with a lid, Its a silencer I guess,
Is it important or I could do without it.

Re: Motor oil

silencer is important. if you want your motor to last, use TC-W3, chain saw oil is for air cooled 2 cycle motors.

Re: Motor oil

My Silencer lid is missing, I can make one if the shape is normal, I don't think its available in the spares shops, never went across in catalogs.
I never hesitatd on oil, I was telling them guys they were wrong, but wasn't very certain.

Re: Motor oil

What model motor are we speaking of here? I'll bet there are a lot of silencers around from parted-out motors.

I am sure there are many around you, but I don't even have one to look at, I live very far away, but I can make one myself if the form is not so important, I will look at the one on my smaller engine, The only thing that might happen is slight change of volume and if it is not so important, it will do.
Do you thing that shape of lid and volume of silencer are important?

Re: Motor oil

There is a reason they make special oil for outboards, they run much cooler than a mower or chainsaw and require a different blend of oil, it will probably work but why risk it.

You may save $20 on oil and cause $1000 in damage, like not changing oil in your car to "save money".

As to the silencer I have been told by an old timey OMC mechanic that it is very important to make the engine run correctly, poke around on Ebay or maybe someone here can set you up with one but I would say you need one.

The sound waves absolutley do make a difference. Maybe more on some motors than others. I am reminded of the time I tried to make a little 6hp run in a closed compartment on a sailboat. Because of smoke inhalation it wouldn't run in there. So, being as brilliant as I am, I fabricated a hose leading from the carburetor intake to the air outside the compartment. That stupid motor barely ran at all, breathing through that hose. So, being as brilliant as I am, I fabricated a much larger hose intake, way bigger than the carburetor intake. I figured it surely would get enough air through that!! If anything, it actually ran worse!! Being as brilliant as I am, I can only conclude that it was the sound waves that was messing it up, it certainly wasn't being choked down by too small a hose. All this of course is similar to and related to tuned exhaust. I'm not brilliant enough to design that either.

Re: Motor oil

The guys on the chainsaw forums think you should not run marine 2 stroke in a chainsaw because a chainsaw is air-cooled and runs a lot hotter requiring a different oil formulation from outboards which are liquid cooled and therefore run cooler. If you read the ratings on the containers, they are not the same in most cases.

Funny !!!!!

We sure seem to love the oil threads don't we !!!!

Re: Motor oil

I never said I was running with chainsaw oil, guys around me at the river do and I was telling them they were wrong, but didn' have arguments, I read the article I was told and am happy with arguments now - hard ash content which burns at high temperatures and spoils your motor at low. I did use TCWII in my chainsaw, long ago but that's another question.

That's exactly what I had in mind. A picture of the lid would help. I'll get the proportions and having the general dimensions of the silencer I could fabricate something very close.
Is that called a silencer or I call it so?
Thanks for the understanding.
I dreamt of a 90 v-4, I got it and now want the best of it, by the way whats the normal idle - that's in gear!
