Im debating wheather to by pass the oil injection unit on my boat. Not sure which route to take but I am leaning towards pre mixing gas/oil. The oil injections system seems to be a point of failure. If I do decide to go through with this, should I have a pro do this or is it easy enough for a mechanically inclined person to conduct this procedure? Please help.

you have a new OMS mixing pump, not the old troublesome VRO pumps. yours should be fine.
but if you decide to eliminate the oil side, i can tell you.

Well I guess I can wait on bypassing the OMC. The only problem now is that I get the oil alarm and it look like there is at least 2in of oil in the reservior. Why do you think it is doing that? I went out this past Saturday morning and it got rough on the way back into the dock. The oil alarm went off so I shutdown the engine for a while. I figured that the oil was jumping around so much that the pump couldnt pick up any oil. After a while I turned it back on and the alarm was not on anymore so I proceeded to the loading dock. The next day is when it started giving me the alarm. I was trying to flush the engine and the alarm went off.

I would think keeping the oil above 2 " in the tank would be a good idea. When the alarm goes off, toss in a gallon. Why not stick a gallon in the bilge to refill the oil tank, in case it gets low while you are out. I routinely add a gal of oil ever other time I add gas.

Do you have the System Check gauge? If you have the 8 pin socket under the dash, in the wiring harness, you can buy the System Check Tach and have lights and horns that tell exactly what the problem is.

BTW - Faria makes the gauge, among other brands.

if you use a gallon of oil on a weekend, something is wrong, or you do one heck of a lot of running, that would be 48 gallons of fuel.

Actually TD, that motor runs at about 60::1 gas-oil ratio. I exaggerated when I said I put a gal of oil in every other time I fill up. it is actually every 2.5 times I fill up, since I routinely put in 24 gallons at a time.

I do think it is smart to have a gal of 2 cycle oil on board if the tank ever runs low, or if the oil injection fails, you can immediately premix in the boat's gas tank. My gas tank is 63 gal, so even if the tank is full when the oil injection fails, I can dump in the gallon of oil and run the motor at a moderate throttle setting to get home.

Re: 2000 90hp Johnson-bypass oil injection

Thanks for all of your help guys. I have learned quite a bit by this forum. If I carry a quart of oil, and my omc pump fails when I am out on the water, could I simply disconnect the harnes from the omc pump and pour oil into the gas tank?

Re: 2000 90hp Johnson-bypass oil injection

By the way, my RPM Guage doesnt work but all of the alarm led work just fine. I checked continuity fromthe rpm connection to some connections on the engine and i was able to find all of them. Any suggestions?

A quart of 2 cycle oil will mix at 50::1 with 12 gal of gas. If your gas tank is larger than 12 gal, you will need to carry more oil.

The Tachometer runs off the voltage regulator. If the VR is bad, the tach might not work. Does the motor charge the battery? You will need to determine if the Tach is bad, the VR is bad or the wiring in between is bad. I recommend you run a wire from the VR (one of the yellow wires) directly to the tach. If it still doesn't work, you might substitute it for a known good tach and retest. if it still doesn't work, or if the battery isn't charging, you will need to replace the VR. They are avail aftermarket from CDI, or from OMC.

Re: 2000 90hp Johnson-bypass oil injection

I have never had problems with the battery(thank God), and I believe it is being charge or else I would hear it drag when trying to start the boat. Where is the VR located? How will I recongize it?
