My 1987 mercruiser Alpha 1 gen 2 out drive has loose steering connection. The two aft facing nuts ( boy thats a close one) near the top of the intermediate housing and seem to tighten the whole deal to what seems to be the steering arm, where and are tight. Meaning I didn't have to tighten them. After cleaning out the old grease I can see some play between the vertical pin and out intermediate housing /gimbal. My question is there a shortcut way to take that assy off and see what's worn out? If so can someone advise? Thanks, Len.

Len, are you sure it's a gen II? Anyway go to the adults only section at the top of this forum. Then go to the service manual section. Find the service manual for your drive and download it.

You may want to take a good look at the section entitled "Service Procedures Requiring Major Disassembly". Get a good feel for how your drive is assembled. Also, there should be a portion that discusses an Access Plug Kit.

I'm in the process of replacing my gimbal ring on a bravo drive and chose to pull the motor, etc., etc. Which actually has turned out to be a good thing, since I can now get to everything (well almost everything) and repair or replace the worn "stuff".

Yes, there is a Kit for drilling the transom shield to Fix that,...
But,...
As noted by Zackman,... I've always done it by pulling the motor for access,...
There's Usually other things I want to get at when I'm digging that Deep....

Thank you for the reply Zackman,
* are you sure it's a gen II? No, I'm not and according to Bond-o I probably don't. I must have a gen 1.
* Anyway go to the adults only section at the top of this forum. Then go to the service manual section. Find the service manual for your drive and download it.
May be there are different option available on the form for you as I don't see what you ask me to look for. Could you give me more details on where to look?
Thank again, Len

Perfect, Thanks you. Looks like a bigger job then I think I want to tackle at this point. Let me see if I can get the motor bogging down issue cleared up (separate post) and then maybe hit this with some momentum.
As for servicing this drive system, It has a new Gimbel bearing as well as the upper out drive gear box got rebuild, Here's a Readers Digest version:
Encouraged to buy a project boat by my O.C.P.S. Adult votec instructor as a good project for class. I bought this Sea Ray S-19. for $700 He was right in that it would be a good education --> ( ! ) any way. Orange county canceled the class long before the project was completed. So the boat was covered with a tarp and parked in the barn three years ago. A couple weeks a go after fixing my 60hp Johnson ( separate post) motivated me to finish the S-19. Len
