I found a chevy 250 block to rebuild and replace my Mercruiser 165. Finally found one nearby with the front bolt pattern needed for marine. The threads in the block for the motor mounts are rusted out pretty bad in the front/ port side of the engine. Would a heli coil work well here ? Would it be better to drill & tap out to the next size? The mounting bracket might have to be drilled out if a larger bolt is used.

Helicoils will work fine.

Ayuh,...

A properly installed Heli-coil leaves Better threads than the originals....

myself. being a cheap a** and lazy. i'd try to clean up the threads ya got. chase them with a tap. see how that works out first. see if ya can put a bolt in it and bring it up to the torque value necessary for that bolt. if there really is nothing left of the screw threads or they're still questionable, then i'd move on to the helicoil....

What is the reason you are replacing the motor? Is it blown, broken or just plain worn out? I have a Mercruiser 165 in my Cobalt 17' Tri-hull and was wondering if there were any real concerns with the motor or the drive. Thanks for any response and good luck with the replacement.

Re: Mercruiser 165

Any engine can wear out.

My 230 cu-in L6 (150 Mercruiser) only went about 2000 hrs and 39 years before I sold it. (as far as I know it's still running)

The 230/250 GM engine was one of the best engines ever built for a sterndrive application.

If you have any specific questions, it might be best to start a new thread for them.

Cheers,

Rick

Re: Mercruiser 165

The old Merc 165 has a wad of epoxy on the side of the block. I had put jb weld on a cracked block last spring after finding an old epoxy repair that failed. Toward the end of last season a raw water leak started between the block and head , starboard side near 5 cyl. The new epoxy failed last fall too. I'm tired of seeing salt streaks on the engine . Too bad because compression good, runs good, oil clean, spark plugs don't show signs of water intrusion. The head also is cracked and has a slight leak right next to where cyl 1 spark plug seats. I'm hoping on throwing another head on during the winter to buy myself time for a rebuild in late spring.

What are you gonna rebuild another block ??

Check that it has the holes for the front motor mount.

even if it doesn't have motor mount holes, you can easily purchase an 'L' shaped iron clip from any iron or welding shop / supplier in your area. cost about .39 cents. works perfectly and still in service for 4 years now. just connected it from the front motor mount to a hole in the front of the block in the area of where the marine hole would be............
