The vast majority of problems with any outboard, regardless of make and model, are owner induced. Lack of general maintenance creates running issues that eventually leads to total failure. Use fresh fuel, use a fuel system conditioner like SeaFoam, and give the engine a general "look see" now and then for signs of pending problems. If you have a four stroke, check engine oil level frequently and smell the dipstick for evidence of fuel contamination. Change oil frequently if that's the case and make the run back to the dock at wide open throttle to prevent "making oil"..
