I own an 89' Johnson 110 and I am looking to get the carbs rebuilt, it has a hell of a time starting but runs strong when I do get it started. How much does a rebuilt cost, it has 2 carbs.

Re: 89' Johnson carbs

I'm thinking probably 300 to 500 bucks. Why not do it yourself, save the time of waiting on them to do it, and the money, and have the knowledge of how it works for when you do it again.
These guys can tell you all about it, and an outboard carb is not nearly as hard to work on as an automobile carb.
I'd give it a try. Take it apart, blow out all the passages after a good soak, put it back together with a new carb kit, and go about your business. I'd take pics and be very careful I payed attn. to how the linkages go together. That would be my only worry. Cleaning the carb is really simple.:)

If your reason to rebuild the carbs is due to hard starting-make sure the fuel primer solenoid is functioning first. It is activated when you push in the key to start the engine when cold.

I agree with emdsapmgr, if it idles and runs normally everywhere else I would look into the primer.

Usually dirty carbs will cause an engine to run baddly at idle or there will be no top end, if it is just getting it started it probably isn't the carbs.

AN OEM manual is @ $50 and has a really good trouble shooting guide and it isn't that hard to do it yourself if you are at all mechnaically inclined, something to think about.

Re: 89' Johnson carbs

those motor have to have a fully charged battery, and clean cables. they have to turn +-300 rpms to start, if they don't they just won't start.
just check these things.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad.

i have a 88 which is the same basic motor, would not start unless fully charged and tight clean cables.

Re: 89' Johnson carbs

Is the fuel primer solenoid where you can push the key in and turn it to start, if so I think that could be the problem. Can you explain how this works?

The exact prolem I am having is when I go to start it cold it will turn over but not fire up. I do not think its the starter or the wiring related. That battery will turn it over for days. I would have to use starter fluid to start it from cold, which made me think it was carb related. Please help!

Yes, Pushing the key actuates the fuel primer.

I've been told to start it cold:

1-Squeeze the fuel bulb until its firm
2-Turn the key ON
3-Press the key in for 8 seconds
4-Release pressure on key
5-Crank motor it should fire
6-Press key in while running if it sounds like its slowing down/dying - I never do this in florida. I'm always done at step# 5

Hope this helps - I'm sure if I'm out of line someone will say so.

Lets say it is the fuel primer and it's not working, what can I do to fix it?

replace it, makes sure the electrical connection are clean, and test with multimeter, to be sure you have power to it. no power then time to back track to ignition switch.
