Looked online mercruiser offered a 25w40 weight oil which I have decided to use in my 84 mercruiser 260hp 350 gm motor.

I noticed they have a regular dino version in a black bottle and a synthetic blend in the red bottle..do they not offer a full synthetic?

anyway..anyone think I should go synthetic? I haven't really thought about it sine the boat is old but it only has 436 hours on the motor..so I got to thinking maybe it would be good to go with the synthetic blend.

I assume the synthetic blend will clean up the engine some and keep it cleaner than the dino. Which is what I assume is going on with the synthetics I put in my car and in my truck.

anyway who has used either? good oils or what?

I plan to change the fluids only once a season...
thanks

Dude,..... It Don't Matter....

Use Whatever oil you Want to use......

If you have an Oil Question,...
Search Oil in this forum,...
You'll be busy for Days reading the results,+ will be Twice as confused as you were when you Started.....

Again,.. Read my lips,.... IT DON'T MATTER........

I personally think synthetic, over the life of my boat, will pay for a new engine in about 10 years. I'd rather have a new engine. 'Course I'd install it myself, so about $1000 or whatever.

I do use synthetic in the leg to try to extend the life of the leg because parts will get more scarce over the next 10 years I suspect (Alpha gen 1).

Hovever, I do recommend Slick50 or similar PTFE engine treatment. Try this test. Get her warm and check engine idle speed. Do the slick 50, run it a few times, then check again. My idle increased about 100 rpm....Only thing I can think of is less internal friction. Good for engine life, 6p1re62 (That last word brought to you by my 1 year old) good for performance/fuel economy.

Same results on my motorbike. Has to be carb controlled or non IAC fuel injected to yeild proper results.

We just went thru this oil thing with you a couple of weeks ago, along with what Quicksilver was. Here, in case you want to read it all again.

My man latter for this oil thread stuff, better ways to pad the count hah.

But heres my 2 cents, cheapest stuff you can buy in wal-mart.

Enough with the oil threads do a search and read away to oblivion.

I guess by "Op's" you mean opinions.

Please do a search on this site for oil recommendations etc.

Believe me, you will get more oil threads (and opinions) than you have time to read.

What you'll find is exactly what Don indicated. Everything has been tried, recommended, used, changed etc etc etc.

Either use what Merc suggests or what ever you want. It will make no difference. Just change it when the manufacturer recommends.

The common thread on oil threads, is that they usually turn into a fight, get personal then they get locked more than any other subject.

They use up a lot of "space" because some people (I'm not pointing fingers) are simply too lazy or too impatient to do a simple search for this very common and repeated info...

The other more important point is they use up a lot of time when we all keep repeating the same info over and over.

This common thread is also repeated over and over on every auto/truck/boat/RV/lawnmower, (you name it) site on the internet. The answers are usually the same.

The best bet is to simply do what Merc suggests. The chart has been posted here many times.

Rick

Synthetic rules...could be why my ZR-1, can factory filled with it.

As I recall...you are running synthetic in all of your 'rides'.

Add your boat to the list...!

P.S. To the 'doubting Thomas'es'...it is proven that synthetic oil 'clings' to the internal engine surfaces...and dry starts are eliminated. Synthetic oil was developed for jet engine use...works for me!

I agree I was jsut wanting op's on it for boat use.

It came in my vette too up front under the clam shell hood it says "mobil one 5w30" so that was the factory fill.

I also have a 1968 convertible 4sp 427/390 one that I body off restored to ncrs specs.

I love gm mainly their trucks and the vettes.

here mine are and I think u can see the mobil 1 sticker under the hood in the first pic

Looks like you have been busy...!

Sweet 'rides'...but what is up, with all the empty GTX bottles???

Only kidding...you have the obvious background to know that you can't go wrong with syn in your Mercruiser. There are nothing but pluses...!

So, what good is all those pictures? This is a BOATING FORUM, not a car forum.
When was the last time you ran any of those up a steep hill in low gear at 3500 to 4000 rpm for hours on end?
That's what a boat engines life is like.

At least you found some one that answers what you want to hear. Doesn't mean it right or wrong, but it is what you want to hear and that is all that counts.

Ah you corvette guys all have that typical Chevy breath. And all the ribbons to go with it, a guy at work was bragging about the blue ribbon he won at one those vette shows and it's a brand new vette, i don't get it?

No, you and many others on here THINK they know their stuff when in my op most on here don't know crap..most are rednecks that go with whatever makes their engines run.

I ask simple question some new ones were about resin, wood work etc which I admit I don't know much on BUT most here don't either..

other questions where to the point what is the part number for the correct quicksilver oil filter for my engine? NOBODY GAVE A ANSWER..I asked the same thing for the water seperator..NOBODY SEEMED TO KNOW THAT EITHER. No the manual which I have doesn't say either...so don't put it off on an manual. I woulda thought with a mercruiser 260r engine which is a popular engine people would know part numbers etc...but NOPE.

this place is mostly people guessing around..ncrs.org isn't like that we know our stuff..u guys talk junk without knowing your ****

and some think I'm the one that doesn't know lol I'm just way more anal and picky...

I am very engine savy I also did my first outboard rebuilt MYSELF...I rebuilt the 150 evinrude on my 1993 192f nitro bass boat..but with wood work etc and part numbers I'll use a forum...but like I said nobody knows that stuff on here and stuff like that is white or black..gimme the part number for quicksilvers oil filter for a mercruiser 260r..nobody even knows that..

what a joke, then u report someone harassing your threads to mods to clean the thread up and they tell you grow thicker skin..

I am gonna go higher with that..u just wait.

OK I vented how I feel about this place. Also this is directly to only those certain members who like to downgrade peoples threads..

oh and ROCKY

the gtx bottles were used to prime the engine....I used my oil priming tool and that drill there to prime it...so ya I got cheap on the priming..

after the engine ran fro 20 mins to break the cam in I dumped it and put mobil 1 in it :)

Re: mercruiser 25w40 oil, they have reg dino and a syn blend, is synthetic worth it?

So, what good is all those pictures? This is a BOATING FORUM, not a car forum. Most boat owners have numerous related 'hobbies'...that is what makes us different from the aberage 'working stiff'.
When was the last time you ran any of those up a steep hill in low gear at 3500 to 4000 rpm for hours on end? could that be why Mercury 'pushes' their syn blend, as an upgrade?
That's what a boat engines life is like.

At least you found some one that answers what you want to hear. Doesn't mean it right or wrong, but it is what you want to hear and that is all that counts.

A simple parable...that could have some positive effect here:

A city dude is driving down the country road...and stops to get directions.

"Excuse me, but is this the correct road to Burnsville?"...he asks the older gentleman, sitting on his front porch.

"Yup"...the local replies.

"Thanks!"...and he drives on.

Within a few minutes, the city guy is coming back, and slams to a halt...clouds of dust flying.

"Why didn't you tell me that the bridge was down...?"

The old timer looks at him, and says..."You didn't ask."

Think about this...maybe some of us, are just too condescending...and reluctant to remember when we were just 'the city guy, driving down the road'.
