I have a 1996 Johnson 150hp Ocean Runner. What is different from a standard outboard motor versus mine which is an Ocean Runner. Its obvious its made for the Ocean, but what makes it better for the ocean (or large bodies of water). Thanks for any insight.

The thing that makes my 150 sea horse special is the sticker.

The Oceanrunner 150hp has different carburettors to the GL model, as it is tuned for greater torque at lower engine RPM.

The gearbox is a different casting, as it has a "relieved split line". This means that the upper edge of the gearcasing only touches the mid section leg casting at limited points. The idea is to reduce corrosion where the two surfaces meet by restricting the area where the painted sufaces can chafe. Later models all used the Oceanrunner gearbox.

Also there is a difference on the steering arm. Not just the bit sticking out at the top to which the steering cable connects, as it is also a solid shaft with a splined bottom end that extends downwards to just above the gear box. On the Oceanrunner model, this is stainless steel, instead of mild steel.

It is most definitely not just marketing hype!

Plus extensive use of Stainless Steel bolts throughout...
