just a question?

My son showed me a science project that they had to dispel some of the global climate change myths. Remember that most of the ice is under water when you ponder this. Take a glass, fill it full of ice, then fill the rest of the glass with water. When it melts the ice, does the glass overflow? Of course not. Ice expands as it freezes, so you actually have less volume in the glass when it melts. So much for the oceans rising. There would actually be more land mass because the displacement would be less when the ice is gone. This is a way over simplification of this but facts at there basic level are still facts. By the way when will it ever warm up up here? I miss fishing and boating.

Re: just a question?

Personally I don't beleive in this "The sky is falling" global warming.

That being said, I understand your logic of the ice in water melting. But what about the snow and ice that is on hard land melting and running into the oceans?

Those example are not really true. Floating Ice displaces water; hence some mass is above the water line. And, most of the sea rise predicted is from shelf ice that would be considered "dry" from this perspective breaking off and displacing water.

I spent a week working in Detroit and glad to be back where it is a little warmer - warm enough to work on the boat/trailer this weekend.

I like you do not believe in this as well. Was just illustrating a point from the Largest block of ice known to man, Yes there is some on land but the biggest block is under water.

Beat me to it.

Second point for icebergs.
Approx 9% of the ice berg is floating above the water, displacing "X" amount of liquid water below the surface.

When the solid ice berg melts the now liquid water displaces the same "X" amount as when in a solid state. This means no rise in the world sea levels

Re: just a question?

The density of salt water is greater than fresh. The fresh-water iceberg still weighs as much as the weight of the displaced salt water, but because of the difference in density, the volume of melted fresh water will be slightly greater than the displaced volume of salt water -- so when the iceberg melts, the water level will rise, although the difference is very small.

It's really shelf ice that is the global warming concern and a little bit of thermal expansion due to the warming temperature of melted ice water.

Re: just a question?

I'm just glad that I will be dead long before any final "proof" arrives of the competing theories.

In the meanwhile, what will happen if a volcano super-erupts? I mean like Tambora or Krakatoa? Both dropped global tamps up to 10* for several years. Even that one in the Phillipines (name I can't remember) dropped temps for many months. My great grandfather's diary describes snow in June in NYC in 1884, a year after Krakatoa blew. He called it the year without a summer.

Re: just a question?

I was 13, 55 now, when on a camping trip it snowed and left about 6 " in the middle of June in NJ.

We had to cut that trip short.

Listen enough with the cold here it's 20 something for days and with wind chill who knows.

I want to go fishing. Give me the heat, wheres the heat.

Re: just a question?

The biggest cause of global warming are all the scientists going to the poles to investigate. They use ice breaker ships when you break the ice it's surface area increases and allows it to melt faster.

You ever see what kind of dump it's at the poles, everything they bring with them is all over the place one big garbage dump.

Re: just a question?

heres some food for thought.

have you ever walked on the pavement or worse the asphalt, barefoot, in the summer time?----burnt your feet didnt it?!..........have you ever walked on grass in the summer time?----cool huh?!

how come nobody ever seems to mention all the concrete and asphalt we have strung out all over the world?......................do you think all these people would like to walk everywhere they go......on dirt and rock trails?.......i think not.....how many of these people live in caves------cause you know tents are a man made material thats hazardous to the environment.......seems to me people who live in glass houses shouldnt throw rocks!!!..........

i agree with recycling and trying to conserve ...........but this is getting out of hand..........if some of these organizations had their way we would all be walking everywhere, living in caves, and eating grass........

not trying to change the subject but to me it falls in the same ranking as "the sky is falling"........overweight americans.............come on people banning cooking oils isnt going to help any!!!!!

Re: just a question?

I think the real problem is if the ice caps melt all the fresh water will flow into the oceans and disrupt the salinity which will stop the ocean?s currents. It?s not good to F_ with mother nature.
There?s ways to fix this stuff without us going back to caves. They just have to make it affordable for the common person. I would love to have some solar panels on the back roof and a thermal heat and cooling system and get totally off the grid but it would cost way to much to do.

Re: just a question?

Climate change or not, we do try to save energy as much as we can. Unfortunately, going green costs a lot of green.

We looked at getting a water source heat pump. These costs over triple a typical high SEER heat pump and we probably won't see any break even savings in our life time. Our local Co-Op will give us a $500 credit on our electric bill, but they are still expensive.

Solar panels won't work due to roof orientation and trees.

We are slowly switching over to CFL's as they do last a very long time.

Eventually, we will be adding a K-Var unit as it's pay back is about 2 to 3 years. These units improve the line power factor while running the heat pump, refrigerator, and freezer compressors.
