I have just bought a boat that was registered in another state and need to remove the stickers on the the sides to replace them with my new Reg Numbers. What is the best way to remove the stickers without damaging the finish of the boat. Any seaworthy tricks?????

Woa with the acetone will eat fiberglass.

Bottle of windshield washer fluid and soak the numbers with a spray bottle, and slowly peal it away, use a straight one sided razor blade to get the corner up and keep hitting it with the washer fluid keep it soaked when it starts getting behind the number just keep spraying it peel slow and spray, peel and spray.

Then when all done wipe the residue with alcohol till you get it all off.

Let it dry and apply the new numbers same day so the surface will be clean.

Let it dry a hour.

Then your good to go.

Thanks for all of your ideas. I have an aluminum boat but it is painted, So I will try your ideas. I love the internet. You have a question about anything, you find the forum and there is always someone to help you.

Nix on the razor blade...that's a good way to mar the finish. Try the liquid looseners...goo-gone, WD-40, windex, etc. and the heat from a blow dryer. Use only a plastic scraper...some decal removers come with one built in. Takes time, patience and refreshing beverages.

I used a product called "oops" that worked very well.

I used a heat gun low power setting, with plastic razor blades. did not mar the finnishat all. Menards sells the heat gun for about 15.00 and once you have one you will find a multitude of uses for it.

Acetone better not eat polyester gelcoat. Hasn't on any of my boats. Will strip the wax, though.

Another solvent that helps with that goo is naptha Zippo fluid. We use a heat gun very successfully. But be careful with the heat gun -- it will really accelerate the evaporation of any solvent, and could potentially ignite some.

I DID IT!!! And it didn?t take but 10-15 mins. I used one of my wife?s plastic scraper that came with her Pampered Chef Bake ware. I got under each number or letter with the scraper, enough to get a good grip with my fingers and slowly peeled them the rest of the way. I needed the Hair Dryer a couple of times to get it soft enough to start it peeling but it was smooth sailing the rest of the time. lol
After that I used Goo Gone to get the rest of the leftover glue and Walla! Cleaned and replaced the stickers within a half hour.
Thanks for all of your responses

Thats what I have always done. Works well, but takes some time.
