Anyone know what type of motor this is HP and year model. It is on a boat i am considering purchasing for super cheap and wanted to get some info on if it's worth even looking at.

I just realized that i posted this in the wrong forum sorry it's my first time here. Don't know how to delete so i guess it is stuck here.

Re: What kind of motor is this

Hard to tell but it sure looks like a 40hp... Maybe early 70's, late 60's. Although it could be a 33 or 28 maybe, I don't know them as well and there's no scale there. But as the 40's were as common as old chev pickups, that's my first guess...

Go to this site and look at the pictures to match it up...

If you can get the model # off the transom mounting plate we can tell you for sure.

Re: What kind of motor is this

Okay so I am Pretty sure that it is a 1966 johnson. The picture is of a 80HP model not sure of the HP of the other engine. So I guess my next question would be how much is a 1966 outboard worth. I don't even know if it is running and don't need to get in to a hole. Once again any information would be great.

If that engine is in top shape and running order it could be worth a few hundred bux.

If it is junk it might be worth $25 or $30 for scrap.

There is no way to tell from the information you have given us.

Yeah wish i could give you more information but thats all that I have. Just a picture and a short conversation with a women that has no clue whats going on. Just trying to decide if it is worth going over and looking at the boat. It's a boat motor and trailer for 200 dollars.

yea, sure looks like the hood on my '62 28hp johnson. I agree, take a look at it. A lot of folks are just trying to get rid of stuff they no longer need. $200 for a package deal doesn't sound bad. If the the motor is all you want, and in sound condition. I think you can easily sell the boat and trailer for $200 unless its junk.

Re: What kind of motor is this

My bet is on a middle 60s Johnson 40. The hood shape is similar to the 28 hp and 33hp, but is a little "thicker" in cross section, which the 40hp hood is. You can also see the choke tube leading to the carb, which the 28/33hp motors don't have. Finally, the lower cowl is different than the 28/33hp, and the external shift lever present on those engines isn't there.

I calling it middle 60s because of the paint color and decals. The Johnsons in the late 60s did have white hoods, but were forest green from the lower cowl to the gearcase.

Isn't outboard motor trivia fun?!! :D

Good eye on the shift lever, or lack there of.
I heard you want to avoid the 40hp electric shift models from that era.
