i have a 1965 18 hp johnson fd-19d,failed to replace the grommet atop the water tube...ran today to find out that it ran hot and quit running ...i pulled the top cover off to find it very hot ,to the point water would sizzle off the head,i did not try to crank it back up, thinking that would only cause more harm..yes,it was a long troll back to the dock...my question is ..ive read that these are very tough motors to kill, what the next thing i should do to get her back running?when i got home i did pull the manual starter ,gladly its not locked up..what should i do or look for now? thanks for any suggestions

Having an engine stop running from an over-heat is never a good thing. It stop's because the piston's simply no longer have room to move. If it were mine, I would pull the cylinder head, and by-pass covers, and have a look.

well i had a 125 rude that i had running too high on the jack plate ( im such a dumb dumb) but it over heated to the point that it died and when it did it scored 2 cyls. it started right back though after it cooled off so i would deff check the cyls before running any more.

i would check my compression. and post the results here. the first good indicator is it started and trolled back to the dock. running hot does not always kill one.

i should have explained it better ,however i trolled back with the trolling motor.i did not want too start the motor in hopes of not making things worse. i plan today to drop the lower unit, get water to the engine, choke then pull ,in hopes of a running motor.if all goes well i will make sure next time to have proper water circulating. ill let u know how it goes

I agree with TD. You should do a compression check to see if things are internally O.K. Rick.

i would start it just for a moment before doing the impeller. may not be worth the impeller. but cross your fingers. it won't hurt anything, since the impeller is already shot.

Re: ran hot, now what?

The thermostat is located at the top of the cylinder head, under a cap with three screws. If there is debris, it could easily clog the thermostat.

Re: ran hot, now what?

you can slip a water hose on the water tuve, and turn the water on, don't blast it. and run the motor with the lower unit off, or just remove the tstat and flush the system.
