Pretty soon it will be all chiefs and no indians!!!!

Guess my company doesn't have much faith in a quick economic recovery.

No better in Southern Ohio. Plastic plant in Wilmington going to Mexico. 103 Jobs gone. Thats goes with the 10,000 jobs lost with DHL pulln out in the same town.

Many smaller retail stores will go dark before this is done i am afraid. I am down to my partner and two other folks on my end. Heck i am even makn mattresses now.
I will do what ever i need to to survive this tough period. Not afraid to dig in when needed. Partner would rather i don't. A screw driver is a dangerous tool in my hands

That stinks. Here in the Midwest I don't think we have been hit as bad as the rest of the US. The auto dealers are having decent sales, we had a record year in 08, and Jan 09 was the best ever. Knock on wood, I hope it keeps up. Bummer for all those out of work though. Hope this turns around soon. The media needs to do some stories that show some good in the economy. There are still success stories. Johnson Wax here in Racine WI has never laid anyone off and is still going strong. Maybe they could do a story on them?

DHL had 10K employees in a single location? I didn't think DHL had that many employees in the whole US

Starting to see a couple of capital projects coming off the back burner here in the US. Several projects getting back on track in India (picked up our largest single order ever last week) and I'm starting to see some movement in SE Asia market as well.

I'm pretty fortunate, I'll always be able to fall back into my refrigeration trade, people will pay anything to keep their icecream from melting, I'll do it for 1/2 the cost of comercial rates, on a barter trade & cash only basis, did it before and will do it again.

Here in the Appleton Wisconsin area there are alot of layoffs, lots of factory closings(Paper manufacturers like New Page ,large layoffs at Manitowoc Co. I could go on and on)also store closings, resturaunt closings, and teacher layoffs.A large auto dealership(Bergstrom) has also closed one of their dealerships due to poor sales.Lots of homes for sale that are not selling also.Yes there are a few sucess stories, but there are also large number of people being thrown out of work. Also the homeless shelters are just flooded with people in need.Every day you pick up a newspaper you read about another local employer laying off.Even the cable company (Time Warner) anounced their going to elimnate 1200 jobs.

I'll say it again....,

If you can save, save.

This is not just a dip in the economy anymore.

And at the risk of creating a negative picture, I am positively trying to tell everyone I come in contact with to prepare for a bad stretch, because I really don't think it is going to go away this time, not soon anyway.

If you have not seen a decline in your area yet, count your blessings and do what you still can to be able to wait it out, because it simply hasn't gotten to you yet, when it does it will be swift and overnight.
I am only saying it because I see it happening everywhere I look, I am not dreaming and I am not sensationalizing what I see.

I think to some it hasn't even started to sink in how serious and how far this has gone already.
Both our governments have thrown an enormous amount of money in a drain that is way bigger then the plug they're throwing at it!
Much like one bucket of water on a house fire.

For you who think that it is almost over, or that it "should" be coming to an end pretty soon, I hope it will, but it can't hurt to be wise and save up and prepare for the unexpected.

Some feel it will only last for a short while, I think it'll last for a few years or worse!
Call me a defeatist or anything you want (just not late for supper because I'm going to feel it too.) but dammit get with the program and at least do something to look after yourselves and yours. (Forgive me, I CARE!)
I am sure some of you are already and maybe most have.

This is not about who's right or wrong anymore, but what you should do in an uncertain time to help yourself live in an economy that can't support the weight of ignorance much longer.

Worried for you,
PH.

Agreed. This is not going to be just another recession, that will smooth out in a year or so.

People world-wide, will see many fundamental changes in their lives, for better or worse, some that they never imagined.

Hang on, for this ride.

Got the word from management that raises will be "postponed" a year. I don't mind that too much. What they haven't addressed is if bonus will be postponed too. The bonus is what I want, but I guess its history too.

I haven't heard much in Chicago in regards to layoffs, mostly with Circuit City, Starbucks (what they expect with 3 on 1 corner) and other retail outlets. Bigger jobs seem to be holding and I've seen an increase in requests\sales for SEO services; most of my major clients are outside the US anyways and loving the dollar value right now. They just based this $700+ billion dollar stimulus plan today, lets hope it actually helps.

I hope for your sake they keep the bonus for ya..Bonus at my company are paid 2x a year based on profitabilty and operating cost...Perhaps the freezing of raises will help your company in the long stretch...I myself was shocked I got my Christmas bonus, but I am curious as to what salary increase IF ANY is coming April 1st. Everyone gets a raise on the same day, that way the big suits arent doing reviews and wage arbitrations every week since its Joe Blows anniversary with the company..

It's all over the world-I was laid off 2 weeks ago when Honda UK shut for 4 months.

Luckily I was massively overqualified for the job I was doing and I've walked straight into a new job for more money, but most of the guys I worked with weren't so lucky.

I would like to see a program where a business gets a tax credit for every 40 hours a person is employed (not on how much they are paid). This could help domestic employment.
