A week ago I purchased a Teleflex Red International temperature gauge here on iBoats.com. I was kind of in a hurry when I made the purchase and I did not read too well what I was buying. It was my assumption that the gauge would come with everything I needed, but after I received the gauge I noticed it did not come with a sender. It turns out I purchased the gauge only and not a temperature gauge kit. My outboard (1978 Johnson 140 hp) does not currently have temperature gauge, but I would like to add one, so now I need to buy a sender for it. Iboats has three senders to choose from.

1) Engine Temp Sending Unit, 1/4", Dual
2) Engine Temp Sending Unit, 3/8"
3) Engine Temp Sending Unit, 1/4"

What is the difference between these senders, and which sender is the best match for a v4 Johnson?

Re: Temperature Sender

You don't need the dual because it is for a dual helm where each helm station would have a gauge. The other two are identical except for the pipe thread size. 3/8 or 1/4 inch. I'm not positive about your engine but these are "screw-in" type senders that sit in the water jacket. If your engine does not have a port to screw it into these senders require a special bracket that the sender screws into. That bracket then attaches with a head bolt and the tip of the sender rests against the head thus turning it into a cylinder head temp gauge. There is another contact type of sender that works much better. Below are the two types. The version on the left attaches with a head bolt and is a contact style sender.

Re: Temperature Sender

Anyone know if the senders on iBoats will it come with the head bolt bracket, or where I can get a sender that will work on an OMC v4 motor? I already bought a gauge that did not have everything I need, so I don't want to buy a sender and find out I still need a bracket. The iBoats store does not give a lot of information about the sender. Thanks for the help.

Re: Temperature Sender

Does anyone know if the Z-bracket is usually included with the sender? I am about ready to order a sender, but I am having problems finding an online retailer that sells just the Z-bracket. Perhaps the reason I am having problems is because the Z-bracket is included with the sender, and it is not sold separately.

I am looking at the sender here on iBoats (Part # TS26611 ). The product description on iBoats, and all other retailer sites, does not mention additional hardware that is included. The part number for the Z-bracket should be IA55009.
