I have a 08 VP 5.0GX SX single prop with a 19 pitch 3 blade 14.25. WOT is 4800 rpm at 52 mph GPS. I have been looking at four blade props for water sports and have found a solas amita four blade 19 14.25 and wondering if anybody has this prop or can give me some feedback on at least the brand. I am also looking at a 17 pitch.

Could you post the gearing on the leg or outdrive...Is that 5.0 a 2 barrel carb?

Solas is a good prop they make the volvo penta props. So the only difference is the name on the prop.

Re: Right Prop

If 4800 is the manufacturer recommended WOT rpm, then changing to a 4 blade would likely give you better hole shot and midrange. It might not give quiet as much top end but the loss should be small. 17 inch pitch would likely give you excess engine rpm at WOT.

Re: Right Prop

Thank you. 4800 is the recomended rpm for WOT. I think I will keep the pitch the same and go with a four blade. I am looking for a better hole shot and midrange power. Top end is not that important to me because I very rarly run WOT for extended periods of time. Just wondering but how much more top end spped would I be looking at with a 20 degree prop vs the 19 I have now. I am able to get 52 mph on the gps currently.

Are you running a alum prop now and what type of material are you looking for SS or alum

I would like stanless but I think I will end up with an Alum four blade. I am running a stock VP alum on the drive now.

Re: Right Prop

I'm not sure this has been clarified ....... is 4800 as high as you can go for rpm or are you stopping when you reach max recommended at 4800? Trimmed out?

If it is what you can get from the 19" then I doubt you can get much moretop end with a 20" .... maybe a tiny bit with loss on lower end. SS 19" 3-blade would get you more top end thiugh.

I think if you want to improve hole shot and low-mid then maybe an 18" 4-blade would be best. it depends which 4-blade though as some are more agressive and knock 100-200 off max rpm vs. same pitch 3-blade; some more. Many 4-blades come in even pitch numbers.

Propping for the top end of max rpm when at WOT will yield better hole shot with the 4-blade.

Re: Right Prop

I bought the Apollo 18 pitch ss 4 blade. I think it will give me a pretty good hole shot and improve the mid as well. I think it will be another month and then I will be out on the lake.

Re: Right Prop

I think you'll love that prop. SS is so much better in most cases. Also, dropping to an 18" in the 4-blade was the right move.

My guess, you'll get the hole shot and midrange you are looking for and about the same or higher top end. Report bac when you get to try it so we know the results.
