planing prblems

I have a 14 ft. v hull boat with a 20 hp. mercury motor. I have been out with a friend of mine and I was able to get on plane pretty easy. If I go alone I do wheelies until Iam at almost full speed. How can I help correct this problem when fishing alone? I did notice on the motor there is 10 or so little holes that has a pin in one of the holes. If I adjust that pin up or down would that help the pitch of the motor and effectivly help in the planing?
Any advise or tips whould be great apperciated...
Thanks

Re: planing prblems

Move the pin so the motor drops to the very bottom when down and then put some weight up in the bow or toward the front of the boat. Gas tank, Battery. Something heavy and that problem will be solved.

cbavier is right on the money. Do as he said, but you should also play around with different settings. IE if it works good on the fist trim hole, the move the pin to the next and try again, until you get to a point where the boat starts to porpoise, then go back down one pin hole.

The reason that you should experiment with the settings is that the first hole may be too far "trimmed in". And although the boat wont porpoise, it is plowing the bow through the water, wasting fuel and reducing top speed. The proper setup is where the boat rides level at speed, doesn't porpoise, and yields the highest controllable speed.

Had a little jon years ago with the same problem, got a long gas hose and put the battery and gas all the way forward and it balanced the boat out really nice.

As cbavier said , play with the pin till you find a good spot tht along with moving some weight forward should get you going pretty good.

start watching other boats, especially on plane and just observe. after awhile you will start to get an idea of what the ideal plane angle is. Ok I should add that the angle will be different for every boat and if you ask 10 people what the angle is you'll get at least 15 answers. The thing is try different things but don't try everything at once try one thing at a time and see what happens.
Look at the whole thing as an experiment and have fun

Re: planing prblems

i had the same problem i added remote control and stick steering located at the middle seat.
BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Re: planing prblems

Thanks everyone for the helpful post!!!
Would there be an issuse if the boat was too much forward?
Kinda the oppisite of the problem I have doing wheelies.
Seems like the boat planes well with someone in front. I dont want to change the pitch too much where if someone is in the boat with me the font end is too much forward.
I guess I will need to experiment!!!!
Thanks

It should be a fairly easy change once on the water. I know my suzuki has to be adjusted on notch in if it's just me in the boat. If there are 2 people then I just have it set in the middle out of 5 holes. This works well and is a 30 second adjustment to make the baot ride and run a lot smoother.
