Which end of the cable are you talking about?

Assuming you are talking about the end inside the boat here is a pic from manual #6. A little easier to understand then the older manuals.

After you get the end of the inner core wire, you pull the inner core wire out of the cable from outside the boat at the bellhousing.

from my recollection. after the drives pulled. ya remove the core wire from the shift cable. this requires ya to remove the end that dons' pic is about (inside the boat). after the core wire is removed. ya just pull the whole cable out, bell houseing and cable together. pulling the outside of the cable through the gimble housing. then after the bell housing is off. ya use the special shift cable tool socket to unscrew the outside of the shift cable from the fore side of the bell housing.

Re: removing bell housing

As everyone above mentioned, you need to remove the end on the inside of the boat as pictured by Don, and then pull out the inner core.... but the chances are good that even then you will end up having to cut it off as suggested by Bondo. Even if you can remove the anchor screws (letter "a" above, they are usually rusted up), they often put such a "dimple" on the wire that the end guide ("b") will not come off without breaking it. Solution? New shift cable! ;) Of course, that's only my perspective from salt water usage.

You might want to check ebay and various other sources for a good used complete transom assembly. You might find it cheaper than fixing what you have - and MUCH easier. Just a thought.

Re: removing bell housing

thanx for the quick replies i have been watching ebay but am on a very tight budget as things in my line of work (forest industry) up here are very dismal right now i would like to do things right so if the gimbal ring can't be welded properly i'll go that route
