7.4 Volvo Penta Dual-Prop - Prop seized

I brought my boat in to have the gear lube changed and for the second time my inner prop has seized to the prop shaft (why they put the drain behind the prop is beyond me but that is a hole other thread). They had to put the puller on it now the prop needs to be rehubbed. My question is does everybody else have this same problem? Do they make an anti-seize that will work in salt water to prevent this? Finally where can I buy the tool to remove the nut on the inner prop?
Thanks
Aaron

If the prop shafts had been greased, they would not sieze on in a year, which is how often the gear lube should be changed. Also, if they someone used never sieze on it, there is your problem. In saltwater, we call it ever sieze.
Your volvo dealer can get you the prop tool.

I work on Volvo all day every day in a salt water environment and the best advise I can give you is to remove and grease the shaft at least every two months,it is not a huge task and can save you a lot of trouble,I have had to cut a lot of these props off.I would use a multi purpose marine grease,do not use mercury 2-4 C as the oil eventually comes out of it leaving a thick, sticky waxy substance.

especially with aluminum props they need to be removed and cleaned every 60 days.
best grease I have found so far is made by mercury called special lube 101.
expensive but even the solvent tank has trouble cutting it.
ALL volvo prop maint I do gets coated with 101.
cutting props off is a hassle and I get nasty and I dont like getting nasty.
I am a lazy mechanic.

Re: 7.4 Volvo Penta Dual-Prop - Prop seized

I've been using good old Mercruiser spline grease on props for years now. NEVER have problems getting them off after being on for a year. Maybe the word SPLINE in the grease name makes it work better.
I have found it on props that I installed several years earlier (NO maintnance on boat or drive) and they just slide off easily.
ALL this was done in salt water only boats. Never was around freshwater boats till I moved here in 2007.

DonS ya gotta member, your simply better than the rest.
thats why you have a crystal and they rest of us have a timex.

folks what we are getting at here is simply do the maint as indicated by the manual.
if you dont wish to do the maint expect some nasty repair bills.

either way my horse still eats.
