2cyl GoodYear Outboard Edit: Rotor Part Number?

Got it for $20 on craigs list. It was listed as seized. The pull start was tangled up, I fixed that, and it rotates just fine, and had good compression (it'll blow my finger out of the hole)

However, the spark plugs and wires suck.

I clean one of its spark plugs, and clamped it onto the side of the metal tiller handle, and gave it a pull, no spark.

So, i then tried to hold the wire and touch some metal and pull the rope, no shock,

So Im guessing the ting needs coils? I dont know.
I pulled the flywheel off, and it looks ok under there, but I dont really know what Im looking for:

Pull the coils, replace plug wires with solid-wire-core wires, clean/regap points, clean all connections and try for spark again. If no spark, consider replacing the condensors. I'm betting your wires are toast or points are dirty.

Those kind of coils are almost bullet proof, the last thing I'd consider as being the problem.

I'll almost promise you that it is dirty/greasy/worn out points. Take the points out and take them apart and clean & polish each contact individually with a strip of 400 grit paper. Don't lose any of the many little insulators in the points assembly. Do them one set at a time so you will have a sample of how they go together.

Then adjust them so that they open .020" at their widest gap. Betcha you'll have spark then, and enough that you won't be hanging onto the wires to check them. It should knock you right out of your drawers.

Oh, and make sure the magnet is right side up.

Did everything, Both cylinders are sparking great now. Nice clean Blue loud spark.

Im going to get some plug wires and spark plugs after I'm done learning how to clean the carb.

If you get us the model number we can date it for you.
It appears to be the one built by The Gale devision of OMC.

Well, Im having a hard time finding metallic core plug wires. Autozone and NAPA sold me some that were. I got home and they were not. 3 trips to the parts store...

Try a lawnmower/small engine parts or repair shop.

Farm Supply stores like Tractor Supply or Orsheln (sic). Buy a universal set for a tractor and use what you need. Auto parts stores in a rural farming area are a good bet too.

Well, I made due with the plug wires it came with.

And its now officially a runner. I dont have the gas tank hooked up yet, so I just filled the fuel line with some 50/50 ish premix. Smokes like hell, but runs good.

Only problem is that the throttle vibrates to the slow speed.

Ill clean it up tomorrow and spray-paint it to match my 115 rude.

another question; is this an air cooled engine? is there a water pump in the lower unit? other than changing the lower unit fluid, is there anything else i should do?

Nice old Gale, it is water cooled and it should be slobbering out the slots in the top section of the leg. This is a 1947-48 Gale 5hp motor. The impeller should be located behind the prop and look like a ring with a bit sticking out. Like this:

If you go to www.vintageoutboard.com and click on Johnson/Evenrude parts on the left and them impellers, it well be the first one in the list.

how does that thing pump water?

is it rubber? and when you say behind the prop, you litterley mean, take the prop off and i'll see it?

and is this something I could get at my local evinrude dealer?

Part number 550040. It is properly called a "rotor". It is listed as still available from Evinrude dealers. However, compare prices and see who has the best deal. This is where I get mine: http://www.dewdropimages.com/impellers/index.html

Ok, referring to the picture, the rotor fits into the gear housing cap. In the center is a brass cam called an "eccentric". The rotor should be a close fit on the eccentric (no gap). The outside of the rotor should just touch the gear housing cap on one side. On the other side, there should be a space. The rotor should be just thick enough to fit the depth.

There are two holes in front of the propeller blades. There is water pressure in that area, the same pressure that drives the boat. That water pressure causes water to flow through the holes, through the hub of the prop, and is applied to the water pump intake in the gear housing cap cover plate.

OK, now back to the rotor: If you rotate the shaft and watch the space on one side, you will see it appears under the water intake and progresses around to the other side, which is the pump outlet, and then reappears at the intake. On each cycle it takes a gulp of water from the intake and moves it around to the outlet. The tab does not pump water--it merely separates the intake from the outlet, and keeps the rotor from spinning.

What usually keeps the thing from working is grease leaks out of the gearcase and gets on the rubber rotor. That makes the rubber swell up, closing up the space.

The gearcase uses grease it seems I read here that libriplate 105 is recomended.

it looks identical to a 1950 5 hp johnson I was tinkering with.

i put a lot of 2-stroke oil in it. i would thing it was a 1:10 mixture. that gas was BLUE. I dont know if thats bad. but i figured a little extra would lube it up.

ah I saw 50/50 and thought 50:1. Too much oil will foul the plugs faster but it'll keep those old bearings turning. Did you check out the website I sent? Hes got some scans of the factory service manual up there. The carb section was helpful to me as its an odd setup.

Yeah the Lower unit is very similar to the Johnson, I think the impeller is a different size though, so that page is a good reference.

He said that's not it, and that looks more like a model number

any other ideas?

Your guy is mistaken. 550040 is the part number. About $12 from a dealer. It fits motors made my Gale. Johnson is different.
