I recently had my 20 hp 1972 johnson serviced. The repair included a tune up and replacement of all the condensers, plugs. plug wires and pts. I was told pretty much everything below the fly wheel that was electronic was replaced.

First time out it ran great for about 4-5 minutes and then it started sputtering and coughing as you could say. It had a very rough idle. It sounded almost like a 4 wheel when they idle. It was kinda popping and such. I took it by to the guy that had serviced it and he checked it out. He said that he thought I had a leak in my fuel line. He then used his tank and started it up. For the 2-3 minutes that i was standing there watching him it ran like it was brand new. It was really throwing water out of the tank it was sitting in. I went home and replaced the fuel line.

Second time out. It ran great for about a 5 minute idle. Started right up, then once i got out of the trees at the lake I opened it up and went about 2-3 hundred yards and turned around to start fishing. A few minutes later I decided to let the motor Idle while we fished since it had been a few months since it had really ran. It idled perfect and then I shut if off. When it was time to go home. I started it up and it was a really rough idle, when i put itin gear i could not get the rpm's to go up. It would not idle very well and ran like total crap.

When i gothome I put it in a barrel and started tinkering with it. It would start up and run really rough like before. But this time i noticed what seemed to be alot of smoke coming out of it. Alot more than normal.

Tomorrow I am taking it back to the gentleman that worked on it. He has been nothing but kind to me and I am sure he will make it right. I am just searching for opinions on what the cause to this may be.

Thanks,
James

without so trouble shooting, it is hard to say, water in your gas tank? dirty carbs? have the fuel lines been replaced with alcohol resisitant lines, (this is a must do ethanol). vent open on fuel tank?

The smoke is also probably normal - outboards generally do seem to smoke alot when being run in a barrell. Basically what is going on is that you have put the engine in a confined space, with very little room/water to allow the exhaust to dissipate. What is happening is that it is all rising directly up into your face, because it has no where else to go.

You might also want to remove the hood when you run the motor in a barrell, just to make sure that all that exhaust isn't going directly into the air intake on the lower cowl. Outboard motors (or any other motor for that matter) don't like to breathe exhaust fumes any more than you do!

My guess is that you have an ignition problem, even though you say everything has been replaced. It is intermittantly running on one cylinder...rough idle and lack of power.

It is impossible to diagnose the problem from a distance. Some guesses are:
--A coil or condenser wire improperly routed and rubbing on the flywheel or cam
--A set of points improperly set, or a loose screw
--Poor continuity of spark plug wire connections
--A bad spark plug, or carbon fouling of a spark plug
--Does "everything" include new coils?
--Water getting into a cylinder

Thanks for the responses.

I am thinking that it is probably something electrical that was replaced. Hopefully my mechanic will have it sorted out soon.

Got it all figured out. It seems that we always overlook the simple things.
It turned out to be the wire leading out from my electric start button. Apparently a piece of the insulation on it had broken off since it was a rather old wire and it was arching on the motor causing a short and it kept fowling one of my plugs.

Thanks to all that responded,
James

Hey that's great news. It is alway gratifying to get these motors back up and running properly. Best of luck with it. Rick.
