I have aquired a few (five) old 1960 Johnie and Rude engines I am fixing on fixing up and selling for huge profits. Ha ha ha. OK, back to reality. I have some manuals but just for general information, when there are two wires that go down the lower unit that is an electric shift I take it. But some say, "Electra" on them but have a manual shift by the engine head. So are those always manual shift? Or could they be electric shift controled by a manual shifter on the side of the engine? Signed: confused in Twin Lake

It is either one or the other--can't be both at the same time. Manual shift has a gearshift lever. Electric shift has wires.

Johnson calls their electric shift "Electra-Matic". Evinrude calls theirs "Selectric Shift". Same motor, different remote controls. And both electric shift controls are different than the manual shift control.

Thats the funny thing. I just picked up a 40 hp Johnson for parts and on the engine cover it says Electramatic. Yet, it has a manual shift control on the side of the engine. What do you make of that? It does not matter since it is a parts engine. But I am just wondering.

I suspect the cowl is not original. It is also possible that the whole leg has been replaced by a manual shift leg.

Old style manual uses the blunt 2 piece gearcase.Electric uses a sleeker one piece gearcase.
