Re: Next winter re-power

Yes Don, I did. I am pretty much sold on the 5.7 GXi with the DP outdrive. It?s a little more than I wanted to spend, but what the hell. I am learning the hard way that you?re damned if you do damned, if you don?t. I really just want something that?s dependable, reliable and maintainable. I would rather spend alot up front than spend a whole lot in the long run, which is what I?m doing now. Granted I could probably rig my way thru a lot of my present problems , but that?s not my style. Unfortunatly, due to the location of my ride ,parts are hard to come by. I would rather have a rod in my hand than a wrench. Hopefully, a new setup will reduce my time to maintainence instead of repair.

Re: Next winter re-power

It'sall been said in previous posts, boring more than 30" will cause the cylinder walls to heat quicker resulting in engine temp running hotter. Running heatexchanger would be more noticeable, cylinder will split.
One other way is to resleeve back to original size. As The Chief and Don said a new engine would be the way to go, at least you would know what you have and the worry would be out the back door (or stern).
Good luck with your of engines.

Well now that I?m semi convinced on my package, does Doug Russel have the expertise in helping me with conrols and guages? Will I have to change my whole instrument panel to acomadate the new powerplant? I don't want to buy stuff I don't need.

Re: Next winter re-power

I am open to any advise and any suggestion is welcome. There is no one close here (Mexico). The company that I consult for is basad out of Houston. There may be a dealer for the things that I need, however they will probably order the parts from the same people I would and tack on another 20-100 % depending on what I want or need. I have had the misfortune of dealing with some of so called marine specialists(dealers, repair shops) and have gotten screwed pretty hard. Therefore I post on thid forum for recommendations of reputable outfits for my needs.

Re: Next winter re-power

Ok lets get serious.

Read this thread something you want to do?

Chevy dealers all over mexico bet you can find a crate 350 motor or drive one over the border in the back of a truck.

This crate motor should save you at least 4 grand off that volvo maybe less maybe more but would be the same chevy block.

Bet the block was cast in mexico mine was, says it right on the block henco in mexico no bull.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=291317

Want new manifolds and use everything else on the motor or your gonna want to reuse the ones you got already.

New ones?? 2 manifolds 2 risers and all the gaskets in the same box.
http://amarket.com/omct.htm Or Ebasicpower.com has similar deal.

Now to the drive a little tricky could order a sei at the top of the page here but you would need a inner tansom bracket and the stuff on the outside of of the transom. Could go brand new. Could go with the volvo, double prop big money just for props. Bravo 3 big money not so much as volvo.

Whats your pleasure?? Got to decide what you want to do first , decide where your gonna get it after. Want to keep this boat 20 years and just do oil changes and stuff yourself new, want to mess around and fix stuff every year used.

Ether way i and the people here helping you ain't gonna make a dime. So what we tell you will be the truth guys in store want your money and will bull bovine drop you to death to get their hand in your pocket.

Good luck mike take your time get a plan and stick to it.

Could just run what you have till it drops. Then implement your plan.

Re: Next winter re-power

If you want to go Volvo, full package, let me know. I'm a VP tech for many years and have repowered many boats with both gas and diesel packages.
I may not be able to help with pricing or where you buy stuff from, but I do know what you will need and how to install it.
I also understand what it means to do things right the first time and not try to find the cheapest way to half azz something together so you can "Make Do" with what you have. Unlike some here that think all should be "CHEAP or FORGET IT."

Re: Next winter re-power

Yes Don, Any help or advise would be appreciated. I will be back in the States next week to begin accumulating the package I'm not much on the idea of running till it quits, with my crappy luck it will probably wait till I'm 2 hours offshore to to so. The Coast Guard is pretty much non existant down here so the idea or floating around in open ocean waiting on someone to happen by is on my Things to Do list. What will I have to do as far as controls and instruments ? What is your opinion of the ECD engine display? Thanks, Mike

What is your opinion of the ECD engine display?

Are you referring to the EVC system display? That's the only one I am aware of. Personally, being in Mexico with the boat, if you aren't near a Certified VP dealer that has the Vodia diagnostic tool for anykind of diagnostics and setup of the system. it's also Very expensive. Using the standard type instruments and controls takes standard tools and methods, and you can get a Rinda diagnostic tool for about $400 that will test everything on the engine.
The dealers that you will be getting the engine package from will also be able to get you the Volvo controls. They are basically just Teleflex controls with Volvo labeling on them. You can also order an inst. panel assembled or just get seperate inst. and arange them as you want. It includes the ign. sw. and fuses for the ign. Cables are standard 33C control cables.

Ok Don, That seems to make more sense. Do you know if I will have to change the wiring harness? Right now I have the standard OMC round multi-pin connector that hooks to the engine wiring harness.

It will take a new one. The engines are setup so they can also use the EVC system.

Re: Next winter re-power

do you also suggest I buy an additional ECM(engine control module)? It seems that could be one of the only things that would might fail and leave me stranded.

The ECU's don't fail very often, plus they are about $1400. Expensive spare part that you may never use.

Re: Next winter re-power

very well, so along the engine and outdrive, I will need:
1) Instrument cluster
2) Control box/ shifter
3) Control cables
4) Wiring harness
5) Engine alignment tool
6) Diagnostic Tool
7) Props

Is there any recommendation that you have on props ? I usually cruise at 25-30 knots depending on seas. The vessel weighs about 5-6k lbs.

Re: Next winter re-power

Sounds about like it.
Here is a link to the scan tool
http://www.rinda.com/acro/prodlist.pdf
The Merc tool and the scan tool are exactly the same thing just different paint scheme.
http://216.230.203.183/marine/mtspec.htm

They also come up on ebay quite often, just make sure they have the newest upgrade if you find one.

When you talk to the Volvo dealer about the engine package, they have a Volvo program the will choose the props. About 90% of the time we got the right props by just giving them they year, make and model boat.
