I agree with QC. Name ONE current production model .

There's more to $4K than just bolting on a cat. As Don S mentioned, there is:

1. Development.

2. Research.

3. Other new parts (ECM, etc.).

4. The quantities are fairly low, compared to automotive. Thus, payback for real dollars spent either takes longer or has to be spread over fewer units.

Gentleman i beg to differ...name me one that does not comply......for the past 8 years....Cats are a beaurcratic symbol only...remeber obd 2 with sequential was released in 1994....

Not talkn about smoke pots QC...;) just gas. As we speak the Un is pressuring the US to give its priority emmison control tech to the world for free....Nothing polictical there just facts...A closed loop system is more than capable delivering emisson free tech....;)

Dont give em any ideas Wise One, they'll be charging boats 10-25.00 to get an emission sticker on the boat. Just like vehicles inspection stickers. SHHHH! Coming soon, paying for a salt water fishing license jeeesh! I'm for clean emissions but the cost is outragous. Well i guess if you can afford a newer boat you can afford a CC for it.

I don't know about affording a new boat, a guy can afford this new epa stuff on it.

Let look at it like this for a moment, say a guy gets enough together to buy a entry level 18 foot Bayliner trailer included, 3.0 motor. Right now say it's 11 grand not including tax. Don't scoff i saw one at Sam's club, all ready to go.

With this new stuff adds 4 grand now we are talking 15 grand plus tax.

Big, Big , difference. My math ain't that good but isn't that 1/3 more??

To the point of having stickers slapped on the boat after you go to get the epa test we all know thats coming after they push this thru. And saltwater licenses thats coming also.

I would like to go back to when they first introduced cats on cars for some of us remember that.

My friends dad bought a Cordoba, And everything we tried just couldn't get it to run right with the cats on it.

Ain't saying what he did was right ( wink ) But he got the sticker, went home and yanked them out, and it ran good time to get the sticker, back on they went.

Got to tell you people he kept that car a long, long time.

I ain't making this political, in any way, just stating thats whats coming.

My point was that there is no magic technology that allows internal combustion engines (ICEs) to meet today's emissions standards without aftertreatment. Heck, the flippin' 2010 heavy-duty standard will force most OEMs to use Urea (cow pis) injected into a catalyst to reduce NOx emissions. The new NOx standard is going to be almost as low as a Gasoline car. Gasoline engines have had low NOx for one reason only, Three Way Catalyst and Stoichiometric burn. There is not even any commercially viable alternative fuel strategies for ICEs that does not require some sort of Aftertreatment, and I ain't talkin' "smoke pots" either (Particulate traps?) . . .

Hate to say it but this is the next step to reduce pollution. Where at that point with the automotive market being so clean, that a large chunk of the pollution comes from small sources. Such as marine, motor sports and power equipment.

I think there should be inspections to make sure the systems are working properly.

yep, my brother-in-law just picked up an 08 Malibu with cats. they actually have more hp because of a tuned exhaust.

they all the same but Volvo has a t-stat for the exhaust also
It will take better trained techs now to find the problem

I just took my Volvo green course, lol

I have seen converters on the Mastercraft ski boats with Indmar engines I winterized this year. The only draw back is that its tight and you have to cuss a little to change spark plugs.

Re: WOW, catalytic converters cost $4000 ????

Some of you may remember, I posted a thread about this a while back.

Every gas engine sold in the US will have to meet new emissions standards.

The 11 lb 2 stroke carbed chain saw is going to be replaced with a 25 lbs 4 stroke EFI'ed chain saw at 3 times the cost.

And as don pointed out, the Marine emissions stuff is completely different than the automotive stuff.

If you subjected an automotive o2 sensor or catalytic converter to the kinds of corrosion and heat cycling and moisture that is seen in marine exhaust systems, it would have a very very short life. Automotive o2 sensors fail very very easily if subjected to moisture or extreme temperature cycling.

Those of you who hate politics, please stop reading here.

EDIT: If you want to talk about climate change and who's to blame, etc. Head for Dockside chat and start a new thread on it. This thread is about Catalitic converters and WILL NOT be changed to something else.

Not to many choices when the govt. tells you what to buy. At replacement time, thats another story. Remember the catalic converter test pipes from J C WHITNEY ? You installed them for test purposes only! Looks like these CCs are in the exhaust and cant be seen. Only problem I can see is determining what the down stream sensors are looking for to signal the ECM. Any switch, thermister or anticipator can be provided a false signal. Do it and you are good to go. How many of us are driving with the CHECK ENGINE light on ? FRED

Whats the advantage to removing them???
I like breathing clean air too. Be a good citizen and leave the emissions components in place.

Not saying remove them. Am saying at the time they need replacement along with the manifold/ risers, then eliminate them. There is a limit on the $s you can spend to feel good about the enviroment. FRED
