I'm looking possibly buying a '89 200XP Evinrude. I put a water muff on the motor and cranked and I notice water and oil coming out of the prop. Is this a sign that the seals are bad and need replacing? I have done the seals on '80 Mercury. Are they similiar in replacing?

The oil could be 2-stroke from a rich gas-oil mix. Did you check the gear case oil for milkyness?

pull the drain plug on the lower unit, post back what you find should just be oil from a rich mix

The lower unit was drained. I filled the unit and put the plug and then pulled the plug to check it and found a milky oil matching what was coming out of the prop.

Sounds like you've got some bad seals. Without doing a pressure test, you will not know for certain which seals are bad.

have you already bought it ?? if you have you might as well pull it and put all the new seals in it that way it will be good as new...if you havent bought it yet atleast ask the guy to take some off of the price for the lower unit seal kit...if its still on the seller's boat might be a good idea to take it for a test run to make sure eveything in the foot is still good ;)

I'm thinking that I would just replace them all. I done that on a '80 175 Mer. Is the same on the Evinrude? Do I need to get a manual?

If you buy the motor, get the manual...an OEM manual. I'll save you a lot of $$ in the end.

Where could I find the OEM manual for the '89 200 XP Evinrude?

I bought mine used on ebay. I think you might be able to get newer stuff from:

http://shop.evinrude.com/dyn_category.php?k=82383

Older stuff is still available, but was bought out by a another company. I forget the name (starts with an "H"?), but you'll run across them if you google search.

I think a guy named "searayman" sells OEM manuals on ebay. Do a search for him.

Found it:

For Evinrude service manuals or Evinrude Johnson owners manuals for 1996 models and prior, please contact the Ken Cook Company at (414) 466-6060.

Not too bad of a job if you are mechanically inclined! I did mine last year and then this year had to replace the prop shaft! Now that was a fun project! Without the "Special tools" You can expect to spend a lot of time in the fowl language department! No special tools needed for the seal job!

The only thing that is not in my manual was this.

When you remove the shift rod, screw it all the way in while counting the turms. Then when you put it back in you screw it all the way in and back it out the number of turns you screwed it in. This way you will have the exact adjustment as you had before!

This afternoon I took the prop off and check for fishing line or other foreign objects but found nothing. I'm pretty its the seals. I order a set today. I'm in the process of dropping the LU, loosened the bolts but it only dropped about an inch. Is there something else other than the bots in the unit I need to do to get in out?

sounds like the shift linkage is still hooked up..its got to be unhooked, it is usually somewhere under the carb area

You're right. I've done a Mercury which didn't have the linkage connected.
