I have a 1974 Mercury 1150 115hp. Does anyone how many cranking amps it takes to start this outboard. Startor turns but does not seem to turn fast enough with 900 CA. If anybody already has the motor let me know what battery your using.

Thanks,
Shane

Re: Battery Mercury 1150

When your engine was manufactured batteries were rated by the 20 amp hour rating and the minimum battery size was a 70 amp battery we always recommended a size larger or the 85 amp battery. Any how a 900 CCA battery converts to about 75 a amp hour battery so your battery is basically a minimum size battery. If every thing is right it should do the job, you may have a starter problem or connection loose, check the wires and the plug in if they are alright put a volt meter on the starter connection and spin the engine if it drops below 10.5 you probably have a starter problem but before removing the starter take a reading at the battery while cranking and compare with the started reading if it is significantly higher at the battery it could mean a bad connection or wire breaking down.

Re: Battery Mercury 1150

I've seen deep cycle, and batteries with a bad cell do that.

Try a fresh good cranking battery, or jump start from your car or truck, and see if it helps. If so you need a different battery.

Most deep cell batterys won't start a battery ign. 1150 when all is well on it.

Shane would you post all the information from your battery if its 900cca
that should be at least 300 cranking amps under load unless its a deep cycle
that 75 amps dont look rite.... do all ladies posted and keep in mind if solenid contacts are bad will kill voltage and ampes

Re: Battery Mercury 1150

The battery is 875 CCA at 32 F and it is a Cranking Battery. Use it on my 45hp Chrysler and it starts it everytime. It was below 32 the day I tried to crank it and that is when I noticed the starter seemed that it wasnt getting enough power. I tried about a week before that, when we had a warm spell in the upper 60s, and the starter seemed to be getting enough power. Also, when I had the trottle assit lever all the way up on the control box and after trying to crank the motor for a few seconds, the starter almost seemed as if is was turning too fast and and came off the flywheel and continued spinning until it stoped on its own. I assumed this was just becuase I had the lever all they way up, but could that spell starter trouble? The engine started a couple times that day and then cut off after about 30 seconds. I cleaned and replaced the gaskets on all 3 carbs and on the fuel pump thinking that it was the fuel system( This monster has been dormant since July 07), and tried to crank her up but thats when the starter seemed wasnt doing the same things as it was when it was warm.
