In late 2007 I purchased a boat and motor package brand new. The motor is a 2007 model 40hp etec. I have recently noticed steam coming from the exhaust of the motor. Has anyone else noticed this in their motors and does anyone know whether this is normal.

are you running in extremely cold weather? are you sure it is not condensation from the temp difference. if it is not that, it is running hot. either needs a water pump service, or thermostat. the motor should run between 140-160*F.

No I am running in temps between approximately 18 to 28 degrees celcius and the water temp ranged between 19 and 21 degrees celcius. So I would not think that the water temp or air temp would be causing the motor to steam. The tachometer for the motor on the console has an over heating indicator and no indication has come from this to indicate the motor is running too hot. The water temp coming from the motor is quite cool to touch so I am at a loss.

You might CAREFULLY feel the head it should be too hot to hold your hand on but not so hot it burns you. Cool water and steam doesn't seem normal?
I think I would pull the thermostat and either replace it or test it in hot water
on the stove.

or check the temp of the block in several places with an infrared thermometer.

The thermostat is a good place to start, especially if it's running hot while the pisser water is cool.

You said you noticed "steam coming from the exhaust on the motor".. If you mean from the bypass ports at the back of the engine with the engine in the water (not on muffs) that is quite normal depending on the air and water temperature difference. Those are not the main exhaust ports. Only a fine mist will exit those ports at idle. The main exhaust is through the center of the prop hub and in the water you would not notice steam as you couldn't see it. No flow or steam from the tell tale does indicate a problem. So which exhaust are you speaking off?

It sounds like this is what you are talking about. It is the small outlet at the back of the motor above water level not the exhaust under the water at the prop and it is the outlet above the one where the water comes out, I do believe this is the tell tale. There is still water coming from this, the steam is coming from the one above it.

I think you have a very normal running engine. If it was overheating it would sound the overheat alarm. You do know what that is correct?

Yes I do know what the overheat alarm is. It certainly did not sound hence the confusion with the steam but no indication that the motor was overheating. I appreciate you help with this. Thanks

the outlet on the back of the motor above the water line, is the exhaust relief ports, for when the motor is at idle, and cannot force the exhaust out the prop. sure it is normal to get water out of there, as the exiting water can not get out the prop either. the exhaust and exiting water mix in the exhaust housing.
