Hi guys, this will be my first post and my first boat. I'm buying a 1986 16' Procraft bass boat from a friend of mine in NC and I live in MN. He also threw in his 1998 Ford Explore sport so i can tow it back. But i notice he been towing his boat around for a few years on the bumper hitch and not a built in hitch. Is it safe to tow all the way from NC to MN like that. He said he didnt have a problem towing around.

Howdy, BA.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The hitch should be okay, but be sure that the bearings and tires are in good shape.

I would check the weight of the boat and the rating of the bumper. the bumper on my Ranger isnt rated for much (Ranger and explorer built on similar platorm) for that distance spending an extra $150 for a frame hitch might be a good investment.

Welcome to iboats!

The bumper may well have a high enough rating, but I would be concerned about height- it is probably too high to allow the trailer to be level. In that case, a receiver hitch with the proper ball mount is the way to go.

A careful inspection of the lights, tires, and bearings is an absolute must. For such a long trip, I would be carrying at least two spare tires and sets of bearings. Also make sure you have the proper tools to make use of these replacements if the need arises.

Good luck!

Yea I was surprise when he first mention that he had been hauling his boat on this bumper hitch. So NYBo you said that the height may be too high? Does that really matter? What about doing sharp turns? You think it's possible that the trailer could hit the bumper?

I think what I'm gonna do is call him and get a hitch installed before I get down there.

Thanks guys!
