If ya'll remember, when I got my boat, it didn't run. The fella I got it from didn't know why so I got it for a steal. A $15.00 timing belt and 20 minutes worth of work and she was running like a top! While I have it out I figured the best thing to do would be to disassemble it and replace every gasket and seal in the 20 year old beast. So I took it to work with me to give me something to do on those slow days when noone needs their cars worked on. Getting to that stuff in the boat is a five star b*%#h! So here are a few pics of how it's coming along.

These are the before pics. While it was still in the boat. Looking back, I wish I had taken a few before I began disassembly.

Here are some after shots at different stages of assembly. I'm still waiting on the front cover gasket and seals so I can install the oil pan. For the time being it's just hanging by a couple of bolts.

According to photobucket these are all 640X480. Not sure why they turned out this way.

I hope you guys approve. Thanks for looking. Jason.

Very nice. Looks like you have your work cut out for you with the rest of the boat ( deck ), but considering the easy fix on the engine, you got a nice deal there! I'm almost wishing I would have held out for a boat that came with a motor! Oh well. It's nice to see others get lucky though!

I agree though...more pics!

Oh, and some upload sites will resize pictures so they don't take up valuable server space.

For example, I uploaded a bunch of scans of drawings I made to facebook and it resized them quite a bit ( they were all 11mb files originally ) and reduced the quality to where the text is hard to read.

The boat's coming along, albiet slowly. I'm a flat rate tech at a GM dealership. As I said before, there are days when the shop is a ghost town. No cars + no work = no money.

Sanding, however, is cheap. The stringers and bulkheads are complete and the hull is upside down so I can patch stress cracks and sand in preparation for primer and paint.

I hope to be posting pics of the hull very soon. Keep an eye out for them. I value ya'lls opinion on my progress. Thanks. Jason

......not trying to be negative here: but those Welsh plugs ('freeze plugs') sure look to be steel !!!
Noting your Florida location I certainly would entertain replacing them with brass.
Bravo Zulu to you in your efforts and desire to return your boat to a pristine shape !!

Looking good, Noticed you had some repair around the #4 exhaust port.

It doesn't matter on those engines, they have a closed cooling system.

Not real sure about the #4 E-port. Don't know the engine's history. It was CLEAN inside. Compression was excellent and with less than 5 psi difference across the board, so I'm content not to ask questions. Hence the reseal.

As for the motor dropping under throttle, I actually spoke with a Volvo Penta tech from down south and he claims those engines DID NOT have motor mounts. The outdrive was supposed to balance it on the transom. Kinda sounds like a HUGE design flaw. When it's ready to go back in I'll be making a mount to bolt to the stringer. I'll definitely be posting step by step instructions on how I build it. It'll be a while though. Keep yer eyes open for 'em.

Later, Jason

I suppose it's no different than a 400lb outboard hanging off the back of the boat with 4 bolts holding it in place. If the motor is moving with changes in RPM, then there are transom issues, not motor mount issues.

Another thought would be that there is some "give" in that design in case an underwater object is struck and the force can be transferred through the entire drive/transom. If it were too stiff, the outdrive would take the majority of the punishment. Just a thought.

Might not want to use that particular Volvo tech, they do have a rear mount. Along with the ring that goes through the transom shield there is a rear mount at the base of the flywheel cover to support the engine.
They don't "Balance" one bit. You take the 6 bolts out of the ring (outside the boat) and the engine WILL fall into the bilge.
Here is a couple of pictures to give you some idea how they work

There is a lockdown mechanism on the drive that releases in forward so the drive will kick up if it hits something.
In some old Volvo video's they showed the boat going over a ski ramp with no damage.

Re: Volvo Penta reseal...with pics

Personally I would install some mounts that can mount the engine to the stringers as well. I have read posts where front engine mounts were added. Here are a few pix that I found at another forum that I visit. Just something for you to think about. I would definitely use some type of a rubber mount to reduce the amount of vibration transferred through to the stringers.

Don...That's exactly how mine is setup. If I understand correctly, you're saying that fabricating a front engine mount would be a waste of time? I saw the nifty latch that disengages when the outdrive hits something and as far as I know it functions. I just feel like there should be at least some support at the front of the engine.

The pics Robj posted are exactly what I had in mind. Wit the exception that mine were to be bolted to the stringers and not to wood 'glassed to the floor. If this is unnecessary or possibly detrimental to the hull, by all means, let me know.

Thanks. Jason
