Hi, i just registerd but been looking around for quite a while....anyways i bought a 1970 sea king today, the guy i bought it from said he checked and it had spark...well i got it home and i cant even get a little flicker of spark out of either wire. i honestly dont think this engine has ever been started. it has absolutley no signs of wear under the hood. it does have the wrong spark plugs in it but i dont think that would stop it from making spark. i took the flywheel off to look at things and the coils look fine (no cracks). going from the johnson points setting info i read here they seem to be opening .020 at the right time. where do i go from here? also if i need parts who do i go to? chrysler? merc? Thanks Dennis

this is what im seeing, it still has all the original grease on linkage and moving parts. hopefully parts are available and interchangable among other brands.

Hi
1st get a manuel on your motor. I checked championsparkplugs.com and it shows your engine uses champion plug RH12 or H12. Both gaps are .030, As for checking out your system, you are gonna have to wait for the Guru of this forum. He is usually on at least 2 times a day. Late morning and evening. Hereeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees Frankie. Just joking. His name is Frank A. He will get to you and guide you step by step. Good luck.

Thanks for the info, the plugs that came in it are champion H10C. but i would think they would still show spark. i just emailed the guy i bought it from and he swears there was spark when he checked a couple weeks ago....i dont know the guy so who knows what he saw..... like i said i think that the motor has zero hours on it...but i can see that someone has been tinkering with one of the coils (one of the screws is boogered up). i was going to rebove the magneto but chickened out because there are like plates and stuff under it and i wasnt sure how everything goes back.

i just got some more info, the guy i bought the motor from just called me back and told me that the other day his friend was messing with it with the hood off and he pulled the cord and said it shocked him good. i dont know how that could happen with the flywheel on but thats what he said. he said mabey there was a short or something caused it.

Did you clean the contacts on the points when you adjusted them? I'd brush them with some fine sand paper to remove corrosion that could have built up over the years. Check the wires and make sure none a bare.
How do the plug wires look? they might need to be replaced.

i didnt clean the points, i need to figure out how to take them off the magneto. the sparkplug wires, coils and all other wires look 100% brand new. i do have a feeling it may be the points, i cant imagine what else it could be. my dad helped me get my old johnson 3hp going a few years ago....wish i would have paid better attention. he went to flordia and wont be back for a month or so, it would be nice if i could do it before he got home because he just picked up a 98 150 merc and he will be busy hooking that up to his boat when he gets home.

You should be able to run some sand paper between the contacts while they are still on the magneto

ah good to hear. Spray some WD-40 into the spark plug holes and into the carb before the first start up to give it some oil, its probably pretty dry inside. WD in the carb will help it start up more easily too
