Re: Grew 1500 Project

A little update on the progress, I've made quite a bit of headway.
I spent the last two days grinding the old glue from the stringers and removing the last of the old deck under the foot board.
That glue was brutal: hard as concrete.
The grinding isn't so bad, the clean up is the killer. Dust LOTS of Dust!
Anyway, most of the preliminary grinding is done, just some fine tuning left.
Heres a few pics

Cheers

Re: Grew 1500 Project

More progress...I guess- lots of cleaning!

A little break from the grinding;I am in planning mode now.

I am unsure as to how I should make the transition around the decking perimeter. I would like to smooth this area but don't know what material I should use, chopped strand filler maybe?
Or should I add some 1/4" luan mahogany over the transition? Then glass the whole deck.
This boat originally had sleeper seats but I can't see how they mounted them.
A flat transition would help for a new storage box/pedestal base.

I am also going to reinforce the inside of the chines, they are awfully thin. I can see "daylight" through the chipped outer gel coat.

As you can see I've got some things to figure out before I proceed.

In the mean while I going to scrub the hull with a scotch brite pad and some comet to remove any wax build up. Then some marine tex to fix the chips.

It's a good thing i have another boat...this might take a bit.

Thanks for all the reading material guys!

Cheers

You're doing a great job, production boats are almost all polyester resin.

For testing the transom , water obviously will settle to the lowest points and will always show up there, I found mine was water logged when I went to mount the transponder at the bottom 0f the transom, water poured out.
The top of the transom was wet too, all rotted. It doesn't take long for moisture to wick upwards, no sense leaving a future problem inside the transom, for my money anyways.

If it was an I/O then you'd want to test around the cutout but you don't have that concern.

If the bottom of the transom is wet, and you're already doing a tear-out its a lot simpler to just re-do the whole transom with decent ply and be done with it, rather than patch repair, but you're the cap'n.

Heres an article about moisture meters, most surveyors will not give binding opinions , just meter readings, they obviously don't trust the readings to indicate good cores. The only sure fire way is drill and examine the drill chips.

Re: Grew 1500 Project

Perfect example of why not to trust moisture meter too much.
I was pulling the u bolts from transom and didn't like what I saw.
While the outer core was "dry" the inner core showed signs of moisture infiltration...most likely due to PO.
Anyway not wanting to step over a dollar to save a quarter... out it came.
Take a look at the pics.
On an even sadder note, I've lost my boat building yard, owner is selling.
I knew this was happening, thats the reason I've been going hard with the grinding b4 the move....Notice the Princess Auto "garage" pic.
My way of appeasing the neighbors... gonna build in drive way now:(
Oh yea, I guess the cap is coming off now- something I DIDN'T want to do.
It's glued, screwed and tattooed on there. oh well. More fun::eek:

Any comments (of sympathy) are more than welcome.

Cheers guys.... I need a beer!
