My friend has a 350 in his boat that developed a leak in this plug:

He already fixed it- replaced it with stainless on each side. He has 2 extra plugs for me in stainless as well, but my question is, what are these called and how the heck do ya get them out easily? They are not 3/8 or 1/4.

Thanks for the info.

If it could be removed you would need to grind a tool to fit. if they can be removed, SS plugs can work.I`ve just redrilled and retaped for a 1/4 brass pipe plug. They were used for the water temp sending units in auto applications

Ayuh,... They're just Square drive pipeplugs.... Probably 5/16"

Go to a Hardware Store, Industrial Supply house, whatever, and buy a piece of Square Stock,...
Probably 5/16",...
Find a 12-point socket in your tool box that fits the square stock,...
Then hacksaw off the appropriate length piece,+ you've just built the Wrench for those pipeplugs.....

How'd that Anchor you built work out,..?? The 1 with it's Own Lifejacket,..?? :D :D

I just took a cheap poor quality small 3/8 extension and grinded it down till it fit the square. I just used a bench grinder.

i wouldnt remove those plugs until they leak years ago i cracked a head all the way from the plug to the mounting surface. removing one of those plugs, since then i dont touch them unless i have to. then if it wont easily i drill them out and retap.

Very interesting- how old was the block?

That plug is in the head, not the block. If it is just a cast iron pipe plug, they can rust out and leak. Brass is a better choice.
