So we have a 1960's 60 horse 4 cylinder motor. The motor runs great but I'm not sure about the water pump.
It dosen't squirt out of the (exauhst hole?) it's supposed to right? It dribbles out a little when you really rap it up.

When was the last time that the water pump was serviced (that being when was the last time the impeller was changed?). When in doubt, change it out. I would put in a new impeller and then you should be good to go!

Ok, the reason I asked is because I was reading and somebody said it it doesn't shoot out on this motor.

I was looking at some part diagrams and it looks like a pain to change the impellar?

I do not know if you have a tell-tale, but not changing the impeller because it's a pain, will only cause you bigger pains soon enough. If you do not know when it was last changed, it needs to changed. An impeller over three years old is asking for trouble...worse if the motor sat because the impeller becomes brittle.

People have not changed them and have gotten lucky, but I do not want to be stuck in the middle of a lake with a fried motor and no way to get home.

Changing the impeller is a maintenance issue not a repair issue after it has failed. It's just plain cheap insurance.

at idle you should get drops or mist. at speed there should be a flow coming out. but most of the water goes out the exhaust under water,

the changing of the impeller can safe you a complete rebuild, or just the death of a good Mature motor. also big $$$$$.
