I loosened the bigger bolt on the starboard side thinking this is all i would have to do, it didnt budge. there are 2 other bolts on the sides of the tube where the cable goes in , do i have to loosen those also? please help me out with this problem thanks chris

Re: steering cable problems

Does your steering work? If it is not siezed, then loosening the large nut on the cable where it enters the tilt tube is all that is necessary. And of course, remove the drag link. You do not have to mess with the nuts that hold the tilt tube in the stern brackets.

Getting back to the question..does it steer? If it is siezed, it can be a miserable thing to get out.

just loosen the 2 nuts in the pic you might have to heat up the steering tube to get it out

yep like they've said above, loosen the big nut and remove the drag link. my 60hp johnny steering was frozen, had to beat the arm out of the tilt tube, then cleaned the inside of the tilt tube with a 12ga shotgun wire brush on a drill. lubed it and installed a new steering cable. works like a chram now

Re: steering cable problems

I have a 115 hp Mariner and the steering linkage is almost identical to the Johnson photographed above. My problem is everything is free and clear when disconnected except the part that is connected to the drag link. It is frozen solid where it enters the tilt tube. With the drag link disconnected, the motor swivels freely and when the nut on the steering cable (on the starboard side) is released, the steering wheel and cable move freely, but when it's all connected, the steering wheel simply won't budge, and the motor will not swivel. Thoughts?
