I have an '86 8hp Johnson and broke the carb body and needle recently. I can't find a source for these parts and was hoping someone may know of one. Thanks for your assistance.

Try sea-way.com in Seattle.

Well, the carb body is not available from BRP. Finding a new one may be a real challenge.

You could try outboard salvage places, like www.tcoutboard.com. The 8 hp is rather a rare bird out there, frankly. Lots of 6 hp outboards from that year, but not too many of the 8s. You'll have to call the places, since most don't list parts on their websites.

You can also look for a complete carb on ebay. Could take a while, but one will probably turn up eventually.

Temporarily, you could also use a carb from the 6 hp model, which would essentially turn your 8 hp into a 6 hp. The same carb fits several years around that one. You can check which years on the site Tashasdaddy listed.

Well, just for grins, I went and compared numbers on the complete carb assemblies for the years around yours. The 1986 carb assembly has a different number than any other year.

What does that mean? I'm not sure. Odds are that an 8 hp carb from years around yours will bolt right up and work fine, since they really didn't change much on that engine over the years. But, the parts numbers aren't the same, so you'd be taking a small chance. Still, I'm betting that the flange is the same, along with the layout of controls, etc. Compare the blow up diagrams to check.

With that in mind, there's a 1984 8hp complete carb on ebay right now. Will it fit? Probably. If it were me and I could get that one fairly reasonably, I'd buy it just to see.

Here's the link to the auction:

BRP list the carburetor as 0396182 with superseding carburetors numbered 0398061, 0431832, 0436329 and 0436916; any one of which should work.

Thanks for all the good replies. It will be something getting a replacement, but I'll check the sources provided and, if that doesn't work, I'll be making lots of calls to the coast. Otherwise, I'll probably go with the 6hp version and be happy the motor runs. I'm using it now to power a dinghy so a 6 would be plenty. Thanks again for the responses.

The carb gasket is the same PN for all of the years 84-87, 6 and 8 HP, so it will bolt up. I don't know how the linkages are different, though. The only difference between the 6 and 8 hp carbs are the jets.
