Evinrude 175 will not go after trolling

I have a 1990 Evinrude 175. I have had the same quirk with it for the two years that I have been running it but it is now getting worse. When the engine runs at idle for any length of time it gets a little rough. Then when I start out to run at faster speeds it just sputters. It will go back to idle fine but will not run at high rpms. If I put it in neutral and rev it up to about 5000 rpm?s for a few seconds then put it back in gear it will go. When I run it fast it is just fine, but after idling I tend to have the problem. Could the fuel line be sucking air or have a clog? Could my carbs need a cleaning?

Thanks, Jeff

thanks,

it sounds like your carbs need cleaning, and you need to do a link n sinc. i also think is would check spark and compression on all cylinders.

Re: Evinrude 175 will not go after trolling

I had the same problem with my 2000 rude 175 I found out it was the vapor separator it would dump fuel through the vent hose and in the throttle body. It would run great at WOT but at idle it would run rough. My fix was unplug and re-route the hose back in to the fuel tank and it has not skipped a beat since. I called evinrude and told them my findings and ask them if this would cause other problems and he said no the vent hose is an epa thing. So far so good by the way on my 175 the vapor separator and fuel pump are one unit and it would cost $593. to replace part only the pump is in great shape so when the pump goes out that is when I will replace it. Hope this helps good luck

Probably time for a complete de-carbon treatment and then a rebuild on your recirculation check valve system.

The de-carbon method described in the Engine FAQ forum works well.

Using a synthetic oil with carbon treatment such as BRP XD-50 will help considerably with the engine fouling which often accompanies trolling.

Properly functioning thermostats help as well.

Wow-big trolling motor! Could be all that trolling is just fouling out the plugs. Take a look at them - are they real wet?

Re: Evinrude 175 will not go after trolling

I need to know how to identify the vapor separator / hose. I would like to see if this makes a difference before I delve into rebuilding carburetors. I looked at them and they appear to be very clean. It really does not have any other symptoms of dirty carbs as it starts great and runs great at higher rpms. I have noticed multiple threads regarding the evinrude motors and the vapor separators dumping fuel into the throttle body. I am an electrician by trade and have limited knowledge on carburetors. I just need someone to point me in the right direction. Thanks to everybody for the info!

Had a motor in with similar problems. Wrong plugs.

I did have the wrong plugs with the wrong gap. I corrected that tonight and added some sea foam to the fuel. I?ll give it a shot on the water this weekend. Thanks for the info. Would still like to know more about the vapor separator.

It's amazing what the correct spark plugs and a little sea foam can do for a motor. It ran like a champ, just a little smoky (from the carbon burning off i assume). Thanks for the info.

you have a 1990 175hp evinrude thats a crosflow motor and does not have a VST.

only the 60* engines and fichts and etecs have vst's
