Does anyone have a checklist that a state inspection facility uses on boat trailers? I'm trying to have my trailer inspected in maryland and it would be great that I could see what I need to look out for before the inspection.

In NY state it is simple.
Lights,brake lights,directionals,four ways.Trailer chains,tires (wear,dry rot).
and that is about it.

ROLMOPs covered it,

But, I just had one done last week in MD so figure you might want it confirmed that it is about the same. Some places that doe inspections don't do trailers with brakes, so if you have brakes, check first.

First, they look at the registration and the VIN plate on the trailer.
Usually they move on to the lights next - rear, turn AND clearance lights.
They'll also inspect the tongue for chains and a proper safety pin.
Lastly they will check the tires for wear and jack and pull a wheel to check the hub and alignment. Usually they also inspect the springs, but I had just rebuilt the trailor so got less of a check than I did with the last one.

Sounds easy enough, but how do they test the suspension out? ...and how do I know I have issues?

I would suggest you go to the state web site to see if they even inspect trailers. They may have a length minimum before they inspect, etc etc etc...

Thats one of the first things I did after arriving in Kansas. Plates for the trailer, letters for the boat, proof of insurance for the tow vehicle and thats it. I'd rather have my trailer inspected by a state inspector just for the peace of mind knowing that everything was ok.

Try the state site. :)

They failed my trailer on the first go around becouse the bushings in my springs were worn out. Leaking grease seals will get you in trouble as well.

This is Maryland. They would inspect mini-bikes and go-carts if they thought could make a couple of bucs off the deal.

Trailer tags are now up to $51 a year

Yeah tell me about it! I was in mild shock that the fees totalled about $80 to get a temp tag. Then she said it would cost $51 more to get the 2 yr reg.

Inspect a trailer? No such thing here, yet, but I'm sure if they think they could make money on it they would. They would loose all sorts of trailer registration money though as 90% of trailers would be gone.
They upped the reg. fees here the last few years, they've doubled in the last 10 years, and will double again next year I was told.
I just registered a 16' tinny, it cost me $52 for the title tranfer, $42 sales tax, $28 for registration, and $18 for the trailer tags. That's $140 to put an aluminum row boat in the water. Next year if the signs in the DMV are correct, all non passenger tags will be increased by double. Add that on top of a $32 fishing license, and now we in NJ need a DE fishing license to fish the bay here, another $14, and it's getting pretty expensive to just go fishing a few times a year. Top that with the cost of gas and everything else these days and you get the picture.

Minnesota has lifetime tags for trailers under, i think, 2500 lb GVW. It's a nice deal. They're still registered, but without a title. Few people even bother to transfer the registration any more on trailers with permanent tags.

Yea, there is a lot to keep up with in MD.
You have to renwew your truck tags every 2 years, your trailer tags every 2 years, you boat registration every 2 years. and all on different dates.

And fishing liscenses every year.
The trailer inspection was a hasle because I had no vin plate on my trailer, so i had to get a new one from the MVA.
And when you sell something, they need the tags right away, or you will get finned out the *ss.

I wonder if you can register trailers in other states?
You see a lot of semi's with maine tags, and they are permanent tags.
Maine must have easy trailer laws.

Ayuh,...

I've lived here 35 years,+ had a trailer inspected once,....
The guys in that Shop sure had a Good Laugh about it....
I've Never, Not once been asked by the Law for a trailer's Inspection,.. Never....
Now theses are Non-Commercial type trailers we're talking about,.. Not anything "For-Hire",+ well under 10,000lbs....

I usually licence 1 or 2 of mine a year,... The E-Z Loader for the boat,+ a "Homemade"...
If I need to use another trailer that doesn't see much Road Time,... I just use the closest plate to me...Usually the 1 titled "Homemade"....
For the any 1 of a 1/2 dozen boat trailers that make the 28 mile trip once a year to the Big River,...
They all become an E-Z Loader......

For small privately owned trailers here in NY,...
As long as the Cops think you've Paid the dues to the State,... Little else matters....

Re: State boat trailer inspection checklist

I have a 1987 load-rite 4,300 gvw tandem..Pa requires anything over 3,000 to have yearly inspections. The dealer I bought it from in Philly says it does not need to be inspected I found out later he was wrong(it was originally a nj trailer which never was require to be inspected). I took the trailer to get inspected and it failed due to the fact pa also requires brakes on both axles I only have surge brake on one axle(trailer stops well) I have been running for 3 years without an inspection and have been stopped at weigh stations and safety check here in Pa and md and never had an issue with running without a inspection sticker. They are more worried about your weight and if you have a valid registration more than anything. its all about the money.

At work guys pull a 8,000 gvw telephone pole transport trailer. This does not require brakes or a state inspection because it is licensed as a special purpose trailer (local use only)..I guess this was a gift from the politicians to the utility companies, some trailer laws just make no sense. Politics and money is what it is all about.

Maine must have easy trailer laws.

Not only easy, but cheap (being more of the key word with commercial applications).
Here in MD, you have 30 days to register your out of state vehicle lest ye be fined. Although this is not enforced at least as a primary offense.
MD keeps creeping closer and closer to being the number one highest taxed state. Everyone must like it since it's working out well for 'em.

Re: State boat trailer inspection checklist

I lived in PA for nine years, had two boats, both over 3,000 lbs, never heard of inspection there. I just called the guy that used to do my inspections, he said he never heard of it. I'm not saying they don't really require it but it's certainly not enforced.

NJ has annual renewals of all registrations, they are now doubling most fees before the year is out. They renew DL licenses every 4 years, fish lic. every year, and car inspection is done by the state or private station if you wish to pay someone, every two years. Boats and trailers have no mandatory inspection or insurance. We pay the highest insurance rates in the country by the last pole I say on FOX news, I pay about $3500 a year for three vehicles in insurance, only one with full coverage, and I've never had a claim or moving violation. I pay over $1700 in registration fees, in trailer tags, special vehicle tags, work trucks, personal cars, motorcycles, boats, etc. That is on top of about $6K a year in property taxes on a 100x90' lot and 2 bedroom house where the city won't allow me to park a boat or my work truck even overnight without a fine. We need a permit to even fix a window if you follow the law by the book.
I won't go on further but most here are pretty fed up with taxes, insurance, and fees for everything. Ad the fact that most people drive more than 40 minutes to work here, the cost of gas makes it all pretty unbearable.

I've been looking for several years for an alternative, I'd sell here and move elsewhere in a heartbeat.

reelfishin - don't consider MD, it's just as bad (if not worse) here.
Delaware is probably the best choice in the mid-atlantic (with water of course).
I'm thinking Carolinas or Wrinkle-city upon retiring.
