I have a 89 evenrude 150 and the wires that come from under the flywheel that attach to the #1 on the plastic box are gettin so hot they are melting. one is yellow and the other is yellow and a grey line. the other goes into the #2 position which is fine. i have tried to read my manual but the wire diagrams are so tough to reed. i un-did the screw that holds them together and the motor still ran and i tried to start it and it started backl up. are they hooked up wrong? and when replacing the impeller do you have to un hook the link under to bottom carb before it will drop. the lower unit will fall an inch then it stops. thank you any help may get me to a bass tourney this weekend.

Re: wires getting hot

yes there a small bolt under bottm carb you can get to it with quater inch drive ratchet and extension, push your throtle to forward and look from fuel line side sometimes it easier if ya remove silencer plate ,put the screw back in socket with rtv and let dry then ya can put it back in without it falling out and just pull socket off or you can pull bottom carb but then ya will need carb gasket i do it by uhooking fuel rail and using long extension, some have screw driver slot good for removeing but not putting back tape your swivel on your setup so it wont flex to much ,the rtv will hold screw in socket
when you reinstall

Re: wires getting hot

The yellow wires are for the alternator that charges the battery. They should not affect the running. They go to the rectifier, which is combined with the voltage regulator ($$$).

I don't have the experience on that system to say why they are getting hot, so won't give you an opinion which might be wrong.

However, there are two things that make a wire overheat. One is resistance in the wire and the other is too much current flowing through the wire. Has to be one or the other, now all you have to do is figure out which it is.

EDIT: There is a basic unbreakable law of electricity that has existed since God created the stuff. It states that the current is exactly the same at any point in a circuit. So, with that in mind, and assuming it is a single circuit, the current is the same in both of the yellow wires. That leaves a high resistance as the cause if only one of them is overheating. ....Or...it is absorbing heat from whatever it is connected to, if that item is overheated.
