gale motor

i have a gale motor, possibly 7.5 hp. don't know year. can't find model# or serial#. where on motor are they located?

Gale was a division of OMC (same engine as Johnson, Evenrude, Buckaneer, etc - just a different paint color). I don't remember for sure where the ID plate should be, I woud look 1) on the side of the lower unit leg right under the power head, or 2) on the transom mounting braket. I think it should be a rectangular sheet aluminum tag that is riveted in place.

Usually plate is on top of the mount bracket just under the belly pan.
Gale didn't make a 7.5.In that size there was a 5,and 12 or 15.Rest are sizeably bigger or smaller.A picture or detailed description will help.Some are close cousins to E/J motors others not so.All are Gale products and I believe refered to as GALE beginniong in the late 50s and early 60s.All production
stopped after 63.The full shift models of the 50s and 60s are pretty close to the E/J motors.But not all clones.

I had a 1964, 25HP gale that was interchangable (parts wise) with J & E, so at least that one was a match. Thanks for the additional info.

Last year for Gale production was 63.If it is really registered as 64 perhaps it was a left over 63.Is that a Jersey Skiff I spy?

Hmmm, now you've got me thinking, maybe it was a '63 (?). I sold it about 20 years ago so the memory's probably a bit off. Well it was a nice running engine regardless.
Yes, that is a Jersey speed skiff (you've got a good eye). She is one of the few wood ones still around. She was built in the late 1930's - early 1940's. I've had her for over thirty years now. These little wooden skiffs are my real passion & I've been working on tracking down all the wood ones still in existance. I grew up on the rivers where they were developed back in the 1920's.

Actually I had a a 62 Gale 25 back about 72 or 73 was told it was a little loose ran it 4 or 5 years until it put a rod through the block.Replaced it with a new 77 Merc 500 tiller.$1500 back then.Talk about a step up over the 25.
I think we better get this back on track. taf2, any numbers on that Gale?

i found my serial and model number on the throtle side of the mount right where it curves over the transom of the boat.
it tells me its a 1961 gale, model 15d-128

Nice bonus, you got a doubling of horsepower there, from 7.5 to 15. BTY, just for info, that is 15D12B. Nice motors

By 61 the Gales were quite closely related to the E/J motors I believe it shared displacement 19.94 with the E/J 15 from 55,56 but a different power head.Carb cooling ign parts,props etc. are similar.Many sellers on ebay have excellent interchange info for all these OMC related motors.
