Yes always carry a spare, ihave one that stays in the truck at all times. Also good idea to carry a grease gun and simple tools to change flats, remove drain plug, also keep extra set of belts and plugs and wires and raw water impeller in the boat.

If you need a high rated tire guage for those high pressure tires, (my camper uses 80lbs) go to the nearest truck stop, such as a pilot or flying j or somethign if your having problem finding one at a store. They have long reached handles and are a dual chuck rated up to 130lbs (semi tires run about 100lbs) Perfect for those that have duellys or tandoms.

As luck would have it, I just found a brand new 175/80/13 with slotted wheel on craigslist, for $40! I was about to go down to Boaters World and buy one for $140....the boat I purchased the other weekend did not come with a spare, and even though the trailer has maybe 200 miles on it...you just never know! So I guess I will have a spare as well

I had the same question regarding the advisability of getting a spare because the trailer I just bought also does not have a spare. There is also no obvious place to mount the spare on the tire, and I will not likely have room in the car for it when it is packed up with our stuff for an outing. I can put it in the boat when trailering, but would prefer not to do that. Is it possible to buy mounting brackets for spares?

I highly recommend mounting your spare vertically. Harbor Freight has a little bracket for $10 that can accomodate this.
I got a trailer once with the spare mounted horizontally like 45Auto, the rim was rusted out. Good thing the previous owner never needed it.

I agree completely. Both of mine are horizontal, and they both get rusty. It does however, come in handy as a platform while trailer dancing...


One boat I have used to be my Grandpa's back in the day. He once lost a wheel altogether because of bad bearings. Needless to say anywhere that boat goes an old battery case containing repair kits, tools, extra hub and grease, as well as a jack go with it. Not to mention the spare...

I really should get a spare one of these days... Since I only trailer 15 minutes from the house and where I bought the boat is even closer, I should be able to limp along drop off the boat and trailer or make a run to Tractor Supply if the dealer is closed.

If I ever travel away from my local ramps I would definitely want a spare tire available. I carry an extra prop, serpentine belt, and tools to hopefully get me out of any trouble I may find myself in... If all else fails (Please Mr Murphy cut a brother a break) I have Sea Tow Gold as my last resort since they have several folks in the local franchise that are minutes away.

my boat would never leave the drive way with-out a spare tire and bearings and all the tools to replace them.

Just another shout-out to KMT. Based on Rolmops suggestion I contacted them last Monday, and had new tire and correct wheel on Charlotte, NC by Friday. Cost was $93 shipped.

Yes a spare is absolute, I also put tire slime in the trailer tires, and the spare. I never had a problem. Why screw up a good day.

I always carry a spare and can of fix a flat. If I had a flat on a busy highway with hardly any shoulder, I would use whatever method was quicker.

I have spare, that fits, all of my trailers, boats,landscape,, all four of them are the same size, and i have rv/trailer rider from AAA, and from the water tow service company , which you need to verify if they cover where you boat. towboat does not cover the Hudson river at all.

Does anyone know if fix-a-flat would work with trailer tires? At least enough to limp to the nearest tire shop?

I had one flat while towing my boat. It was on Rt 81 in upstate NY. By the time I could get over to the shoulder, all that was left of the tire was a single bead wrapped around the axle and a ruined rim.

Since I carry my 3 ton floor jack, a spare for every axle, a 12V air pump and a 150 piece craftsman tool set ( in the blow molded case ), it was no big deal to change the flat tire.

15 minutes and I was back on my way. Not too bad for approximately 20K of boat towing.

I now have a spare tire for my Tahoe. I went to Bass Pro today and they had one in stock with a new Goodyear Marathon that is identical to the 2 rims on the trailer. I also picked up a factory style mount. Out the door price was $260. They had a basic black rim for about $40 cheaper, but I would rather have a matching set. I have a hard time pulling anything with out a spare.

My first boat I pulled 6 hours in hot weather on highways and then single lane backroads and felt like I was on borrowed time. I bought a spare on the way home.

Last trip of the season last year, my friend drug his trailer on a rim and the few shreads of steel belts before he noticed he lost his tire on his single axle trailer. Didn't have a spare so I was glad to loan him mine to limp home on.

I carry a spare.

I needed a spare and also needed to replace the trailer tires. I bought 2 new mounted tires & rims and converted the older ones to spares. Now I have 1 mounted on the trailer and 1 in the truck bed.

Yes I have a spare, and yes I have had to use it. You always have to use one at the worst possible time too.

I carry a heavy duty bottle jack in a bag with jumper cables, and small air compressor, and a nice X shaped lug wrench. I prefer a floor jack, buts they are so big and heavy, the bottle jack is my compromise.

In my experience, when a trailer tire goes fix a flat won't help. Also, they develop problems and blow quickly.

I also will always replace my trailer tires every 5 years regardless of the shape they are in. That is the best protection.

Fortunately from my house to the furthest ramp I use is 5 miles and I haven't gotten that just yet. Life keeps interrupting my boat purchases lately. Good thing is the tires on my trailer are only a year old with no cracking or dry rot since we live in Florida where the sun destroys all. When I do pick up a spare it'll be used for both the boat and my utility trailer since they both have the same bolt pattern, size, and weight load.

Wait... I have two spares sitting in the driveway so I'm good either way. Just will lose an hour running back and forth to get either one home or to the ramp after replacing it. Both use 14.5" tires and are load rated to 1650 lbs per tire I believe from the last time I read the owners manual.
