Keeping tiller motor straight at idle

Good day, On any small outboar motor there is a screw on one side of the pivot unit that is used to keep the motor from going from side to side at low speed and probably to make sure it stays straight at any operational speed.

This feature does not work on my Force 15 hp. I never realy screw it in tight ... but now it's screwed in as much as possible and the motor is still free enough to go to one side while trolling.

I took the screw out and it looks like new ... but not matter how hard I tighten it the motor wont stand still. Nevertheless there is no loose in the shaft pivot.

Can that be fixed ? how ?

Tx

Re: Keeping tiller motor straight at idle

I had posted this question in the past (november) and Rosco had supplied me with a part diagram of all shaft and lower unit part, including a description of the part that may need either ajustement of replacement.

I can see it ... but I dont know how to get to that pressure bushing part, and my basic unanswered question is ... how big of a job is it to get that job done ?? (or have it done)

Would a longer screw work?

Perhaps, I'll take it out and take it to my local Merc shop to see if I can get a longer one that would fit. I do suspect it would be a custom part with special tread since it's part of the OB.

Tx for your comment.

Yes that was the diagram .. mucho thanks. Local Merc dealer just told me today that parts required to fix that problem are NLA. And has you mentioned it does seem to me also to be a BIG job to replace those few parts. (at least for me as a non mecanic)

Local Merc mecanic tells me that on these models the inside part breaks from overtightening. May have been my case since I troll a lot and these 15 hp shake a lot at idle. Fixed the shaking problem but damage was already done to the inside parts that keep the motor straight.

I know another mecanic that would work on it if I could get the required parts. Problem is I dont know exactly which parts are needed. I ll shop some more, thanks again for supplying me with the diagram it will help me shop around.

All the parts should be available, except for part #8

Try this link, http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...,7,8,9,34,0,15,6,17,18,25,27,23,24,33,1,2,3,4

THey should be able to get you what you need. Any Mercury dealer should be able to order it for you.

It might be cheaper and easier to attach a rubber tie down strap to one corner of the transom, extend it toward the motor, wrap it once around the tiller handle, then to the opposite side of the transom. This should hold it in place while trolling.
You should still be able to steer with a little effort.

Then unhook the strap when you are not trolling.

A better idea would be so mount an eye bolt to the front of the motor cowl.
Then stretch 2 small rubber straps from there, one to each side of the transom.

Re: Keeping tiller motor straight at idle

Problem is the # 8 part IS the one that would be broken according to my mecanic.

Reading the other options you suggest ... I ll do some thinking .. LOL One of them should do the job.

Thank you for your feedback and support.
