Hi guys,
Was about to build a kit boat when a friend who builds boats said, "why build a new boat, let's just restore my 1935 Old Town Square Stern"....so we are. Wanted an older motor and my father-in-law had one, in the barn. Got it to today, it is a TN-26, S/N: 856709. All in all this thing is in good shape. I need a new gas tank because the one on it is bashed up pretty bad and my father-in-law hasn't found the lower shroud. Any idea where I can get these and what I should pay would be much appreciated. Also, could someone let me in on what the differences between the TN models were? Can a TN-25 tank go on a TN-26? I notice some parts are listed as fitting a TN-2x...but I don't know what x can equal.

Again, thanks. I hope to hang around here and learn a thing or two as well.

A really good place to go about parts for those old-timers is www.aomci.org. They have a free classified ad section, and an Ask A Member discussion forum, too. As common as your outboard is, you shouldn't have much trouble finding a tank and other parts there.

I can't answer the question about compatibility, but you can be sure someone there can.

I can tell you that you have a 1950-51 5hp Johnson, there. More than that, I don't know.

I see a lot of TN stuff on ebay too. The TN-2x...the "x" represents multiple years. You would have to cross reference to make sure with someone knowledgeable.

I've a TN-26 (serial 851681) they should be a dead match!

The "N" represent a "neutral" feature with a lever on top of the gas tank.

Correct TN, N means it has a neutral lever on the cowling. On the TD which is similar, D = Direct drive and no neutral. Aka, pull and go! It sucks when trying to set the idle! And the ignition systems are different also. I have npot opened them up but understand that the TD has the old horseshoe coils and the TN has the modern 5181 coils. I have a few of them for parts and a running TD.
