Hello All,
At the end of last year I got a 1988 Capri Bayliner with a 2.3L engine. At the time I looked for the trim gauge and could not see one. Yesterday, I was replacing a broken scag and I noticed a trim sender unit on the I/O. It has an arm that is attached to the sender that moves up and down with trim angle. There is a cable attached to it that goes through the transom and from there it must go up to the dash gauges. My question is: Does one of the gauges have a dual function that I am not seeing? Where is my trim gauge located?:redface: Thanks.

Doubt it. Sounds like the previous owner replaced the trim gauge with another type of gauge. What gauges are currently in the dash?

Ayuh,... So follow that Cable,... That's where the answer to your question is....

Re: Trim Gauge Location 1988 Bayliner Capri

I have the same situation,

My Alpha 1 outdrive has the sender, and the harness is wired for the trim gauge, but there isn't one. So I simply added a trim gauge to my instrument cluster. All I need to do is run the wires from the engine harness to the fuse-box, then to gauge...

It seems most out drives have the sending unit, but it's an option for the gauge itself.

The real tip off as to whether or not you have a trim gauge is the word "TRIM" on the face of the gauge. If you don't see it -- you don't have it.

:p Thanks for the replies, especially the guy who said the trim gauges were not all standard when new. I looked on my wiring schematic and found the only wire for the trim sender was a brown with a white tracer. I went out to my boat and decided the only place another gauge could fit was behind the start/key panel. Low and behold when I took the panel off there was the brown wire! Now I'm in the market for an OMC Cora trim gauge. Does any one know if all the trim senders have the same resistance values ? If so I can shop for any type of trim gauge. Again, thanks for all the help.

As you may have found out, Bayliners did not come rigged with trim gauges.

Now, you have to get a specific one for OMC. Mercs operate in reverse of OMCs, i.e. up is down and down is up.

I was in the same situation with my boat, a 1988 Bayliner Capri with a 2.3L OMC Cobra. They do not come stock with a trim guage, I added one in. Teleflex makes one that will work with the OMC Cobra. As far as the mounting location, I can only tell you what I did. There could be better places to put it, but I took the metal plate the holds the keyswitch out and made a new plate with a hole for the trim gauge above the keyswitch. You have to shave just a little plastic off of the dash molding to get it to fit. Once everything is installed, it looks really good. Also the trim is already wired up in your Bayliner (or at least it should be). Check under the dash for a (I think) a brown wire with a white trace. Mine had a connector already on the end. Send me a message and Ill send you some pics and dimensions for the replacement plate.
