Re: Smart tabs

Send those pictures to Nauticus and John will be able to tell you exactly where to mount them.

I bought some tabs for my Bayliner and had a question on mounting them, took a few shots of the transome, from the back and side, and he responded in a day or two to let me know the placement of the tabs.

I haven't had it out on the water yet but maybe this weekend.

Question? Can somebody PLEASE! tell me why you would need trim tabs on a 21 foot boat?

grego;

It depends on your expectations and your level of satisfaction. If you are satisfied with your performance, ride, handling, and fuel economy you do not need them. However, if you have ever changed a prop to get a better hole shot, or added a hydrofoil, or moved weight around the boat to improve balance, or swapped motors for more HP, or just put up with what you have, then you may have overlooked something.

Trim Tabs help you tune the chassis and every vehicle (boat, car, plane) should have an efficient power plant AND efficient chassis to achieve overall performance. We tend to ignore the chassis and concentrate on the power plant.

I can assure you that if you tested two similar boats, one with Smart Tabs and one without, you will raise your expectations.

The first boat that I had tabs on was a 20 footer. Absolutely loved them . . . A better question is why wouldn't you have tabs on a 21 footer? Always a great addition on any v-hull.

Bass boats are all I know. So I guess, i will tie a tree trunk to back of boat and brag about the smooth ride I get with my tree tabs. lol!

Grego;

Here it comes, the big What if? I could help you make your bass boat accelerate faster (Hole shot without the hole), ride smoother, handle better, and add 2 to 3 MPH to the top end. Oh yes, one more thing, improve your fuel economy?
Trim Tabs only create drag if they are deployed, and even then it becomes a trade off between better attitude in the water vs. the drag. Once the boat is on plane Smart Tabs are up (retracted) and do not increase drag. However they are under pressure, similar to the suspension system on your car. This help dampen the ride and allows the boat to run cleaner over the water. This smoother ride reduces the in and out braking effect of the pounding, and allows the RPMs to build. It also allows you to trim out more without porpoising. The end result is more hull efficiency and more speed. Now if you want even more speed, increase the pitch on the prop.

Ok, ill do that. Thanks again for your help. You guys are awesome. Been doing some reading around the site. Crazy amount of information. Lots of members.

Cacsmack, I have a 09 215, do you have pics of your install yet?

Bow rise doesn't bother me that much but my boat will propus on a fish splash :(

Thanks,
