Good afternoon everyone,

I bought this motor about 6 months ago and I am rookie when it comes to outboards. It is a 25 hp Evinrude, model: E25RCRD. After I replaced the plugs and fuel pump it ran fine. I ran it every weekend for the past 3 months. I took my boat out last weekend and as I was running at WOT it slowly died and began smoking. I took the cover off and could not tell where the smoke was coming from. The entire motor was really hot including the lower unit. The smoke was white and smelled almost like rubber burning. I have tried starting it since then and it sounds like it wants to turn but doesn't. Does anyone know what caused this to happen and how I can fix the prioblem?

Sounds like an overheat to me. That white smoke was probably water getting into the cylinders. Do a compression check. If bad resurface the head and install a new gasket then check compression again. Let us know the results. Rick.

I checked the compression and every thing is good. Now when I try to start it, about the time the motor usually turns over, it makes a very loud popping noise almost like a backfire. Any suggestions?

Check the flywheel for a sheared key. Your timing is waaaaay off.

I would want to know why it overheated in the first place. It doesn't sound like the water pump or thermostat was working properly...or you sucked up some debris. If you get it running again...replace the water pump if you have not done that already!

I'm waiting on a new thermostat and water pump to be delivered. How do I go about fixing the timing issue?

If it is a timing problem the key in your flywheel is sheared. This can advance the ignition timing enough to cause severe overheating. If the timing advances some more it can cause backfire.

If that is the trouble you just need to replace the key and torque the flywheel nut correctly.
