1988 Force 85hp outboard engine. Usually takes mixed gas, but I filled it up with regular and ran it HARD for at least 15 minutes before engine quit. After getting the boat home, and telling my husband what I did, he drained and refilled it with mixed gas and it seemed to start/run fine.

Now it is impossible to start and when we tested the compression, it was
100, 40, and 90.

Did I wreck the engine?

Re: I ran engine with wrong gas!!!

look like you killed the cylinder with 40 PSI.
I suggest you take it to boat machenic to see what can be done. It happened to my buddy boat 7 years ago : ))

I distinctly hear "Taps" being played in the background! The importance of the mixed fuel/oil is that the oil part of the mixture protects the cylinder rings, pistons and cylinder walls from friction. Without it, the rings will break and the cylinder walls will usuallly get scored pretty bad.

Well, there is a silver lining. Now you and hubby have an excuse to get a nice 4 stroke YamaZuki, or ETEC or something else modern, clean, quiet and fuel efficient.

If you want to do the work, and it is not too difficult for most people, then 2 pistons at about 150 each plus boring at about 65 per cylinder and gasket kit for about 50 bucks is what you will spend. Just hope that the con rod big end bearings are OK otherwise you will need crank, conrods, and bearing sets at a MINIMUM of another 600, unless you can find a cheap used crank. This will probably put it in the range where you could buy a used engine cheaper. OOOOOH! You are in trouble! Do that to my Force and it won't be divorce city because you need to be alive to get divorced. LOL

OK OK Guys, I get it, I am in trouble. Geeeeeez, I was hoping there might be a chance.......

How's a gal supposed to know that the marina doesnt sell mixed gas???

Thanks for all of your support (LOL) and quick responses. I guess the next step will be trying to see how bad the damage is inside.

Sniff.

It sounds to me like it's time to buy hubby a new outboard for Fathers Day or what ever occasion you can think off. The way I see it, it's your only way out of that mess.
You could just surprise him with a new motor when he comes home from work.

Ok, so the hubby checked out the cylinders today and YES, I ruined them. Said that the middle one is scored pretty badly. But hey- 1 is better than all 3right? (Trying to look for silver lining here)

Thanks for all the help, I guess you guys do know what you are talking about. :)

Re: I ran engine with wrong gas!!!

OK! So now you know that at least one cylinder needs to be overbored. This means a complete disassembly of the engine.

Before doing this, remove the carbs and manifold. Through the reed opening, remove the rod big end bolts and push out the piston through the head end of the block. NOW examine the rod big end and the crankpin. If damaged, then it is probably not worth rebuilding and you should look for a good used engine.

Let us know the condition.

Ask your husband if he wants me to take a plane out there with my whips and chains and help him to beat you. LOL

BTW: You may have an excuse. In the old days, marinas did sell pre-mix fuel. Problem was it was not consistant and people avoided buying it, so it went out of favor.

Ok Frank,
So I am going to avoid asking him if he wants your help beating me to death (LOL) and just try to get around that one.

However- there is a guy out here who says he has an "upper unit" from a 1980 Chrysler 75hp engine that will bolt right onto ours (ours is a 1988 Force 85hp) is this true? Do you think it is worth buying it and trying it?

Sorry to sound so naive about this stuff, but I am!!!

Thanks.

Not only does it need oil, but in 88 I believe they were still designed to run on leaded gas. We have never run our Force 85hp engine without lead additive (or oil). Looks like you have a CL special.

Leaded gas for cars was dead and gone well before '88. I have an '88 and the owner's manual specifies that 87 octane unleaded is acceptable.

I wouldn't say well before. We bought our 1984 85hp Force in 1984 new when leaded gas was the norm. It was made for leaded gas and the manual documents that. It looks like by 1986, the US market discontinued leaded gas but some countries continued until the late 1990's. Whaverver it was it looks like an 88 took unleaded. My apologies for my mistake.
