Holsclaw and 9" wheels/tires

Can anyone confirm or refute if the trailer in the attached photo is a Holsclaw and if it may be original to my 1960 Bell Boy 404?

This rig has 9" tires and from what little research I've done so far, this appears to be a bit of an oddball size these days, yes/no? Should or can I replace these with a more modern size? Thanks!

it looks to be a standard 5 lug hub, but i do not know if you have room to put a bigger tire and wheel. 4 of these should carry that Bellboy 480 X 12B 780# 5 ON 4.5 20.5" B

Look at the sidewall of the tire. It will indicate what the wheel size is. Tire size first followed by wheel diameter (as in 5.70 x 8 = 8-inch wheel). If you measured the rim diameter at the flange, that would likely measure about nine inches but the actual rim size is 8 inches where the tire bead sits. The load rating is expressed as a letter or the words "Load Range B, C, etc.). The higher the load range the higher the load capacity of the tire.

Re: Holsclaw and 9" wheels/tires

Sorry, guess I should've been more specific....the tire size is 6.90/6.00-9, I already know this...and know about load ranges etc. I learned this some 35 years ago when I began busting my knuckles 40 plus hours a week for pay ;-)

I wasn't asking about wheel width, what I wanted to know was how common/modern (or not) is this tire size nowadays? And, if possible, should I go up a DIAMETER?

Most websites offer 8" or 10" and seldom list 9", and when they do it's invariably only bias ply and chinese made. I will accept the former but not the latter.

No one has addressed the manufacturer of the trailer itself. I've been told that it appears to be Holsclaw and may very well be original to the boat. Would appreciate one of you swabbies chiming in on this.

Sorry I can't confirm trailer make, but it does look like a good one to hang on to. In my experience, a 9" wheel is not easily available. I'd look at going to a 10". A 12" would be better but it looks like your short on space.

That size is rare but not impossible to find. They were far more common in the 40's and 50's. Duro and Towmaster both still make the tire. Figure on about $55 each plus shipping. Some farm tire dealers might still keep them as might some motorcycle shops that deal in bike trailers. I've had a few older Holsclaw bike trailers with them on it.

They are still somewhat common overseas. I've seen various lug patterns and several type of rims, especially foreign made wheels. I've seen a few alloy two piece rims which bolt together in two halves, and a few monohub rims.

If you walk into a tire dealer, if they even try to look it up, most will assume it to be an industrial tire or fork lift size.
I have also seen a few really old pop up campers with that size tire.
The tire is also used on a few older, larger riding mowers as front wheels as well. I have a set on a super duty handtruck I built years ago after converting a boat trailer over to a more common size.

I have one boat trailer here now with them, a single axle Dilks trailer, with 5 lugs on each wheel. The bearings are standard 1" on this one, but I've seen some odd bearings as well.

From what I can see of your trailer, Holsclaw doesn't particularly come to mind. Is there any reason you think it might be made by them?
There were many trailer companies over the years, it's often nearly impossible to determine the maker of a particular trailer without some sort of badge or plate. It could also be completely homemade as well.
They most likely chose the smallest tire size which could handle the weight.
What type of suspension does it have? Any numbers or tags on the frame?

Re: Holsclaw and 9" wheels/tires

Just went and checked clearances and it appears that I can easily install at least 10" tires, can't go out too far as they may foul the lip of the fenders, but there's plenty of room otherwise...could possibly go up to 12" but that would really change the overall height of the rig including the hitch.

There are no markings on this trailer, couldn't even find a serial number. It was originally white and now sports a Gator model 200 winch...couldn't find any info on this which makes me think that it may be original or plenty old.

The suspension features leaf springs (quarter elliptic) with that pivot (equalizer?) between fore and aft. Axles are round tube. This was professionally built and shows minimal number of adjustable rollers etc which leads me to believe that it was built with a specific boat in mind.

I don't mind going up in size as that will increase my ultimate load capacity and lower the bearing speeds (less revolutions, cooler running, longer life)...and I can find plenty of tire and wheel combos which will then allow me to avoid having to sand blast and repaint the stock 40 something year old wheels.

What's the overall diameter of the tires? Carlisle lists the OD of their 6.90-9 at 22 inches - the same as the 5.30-12 or ST145/R12.

Will take some measurements tomorrow. The tires at present have a pretty tall profile...in the custom car world there's something called "Plus 1" sizing where you go up on wheel diameter but run a shorter profile tire...the overall OD remains the same in this case, exactly what you mentioned. Thanks

SORRY, didn't mean that at all!!!
just that they seem to know alot about that trailer brand
it seems all you got was a discustion about your tires and very little about the trailer.

Re: Holsclaw and 9" wheels/tires

This is your first post in this thread so why are you apologizing? The tone of your response here matches the PM you sent to me as they both appear to be somewhat out of context. Something you may want to take into consideration. Sorry if I sound harsh, but that's how it comes across to me and probably others as well. Thanks

Now it's my turn to apologize...I wasn't aware that you couldn't reply to my PM, guess the forum's defaults are set that way but I thought I had changed that. Let's start over fresh, Ahoy there!
