Im buying a new boat from another state. My question is how do you easily remove those numbers with out harm to paint or gel coat?

Re: Registration numbers

i did it with lots of patience and a razor blade.. holding it flat against the paint.. but maybe some one else has a better idea

Re: Registration numbers

I used the Razor carefully as well. I did use a heat gun to warm the stickers first.

I have some more to take off and I am wondering if anyone has tried a can of freeze spray (electronics stores have it), then scraping??? Maybe I am nuts.....

Re: Registration numbers

I used an eraser. They can be found at any paint supply store fo around $20.00. It looks like a big round pencil eraser with a threaded stud sticking out of the middle. It's used by body shops to remove pin stripes and emblem adhesive tape. There is a pneumatic tool for it but it works just as well in a 3/8 drill. Get it spinning and literally erase the vinyl off. It may leave some of the adhesive when you're done but a mild solvent will clean it right up.

A word of caution: It generates a great deal of heat (it is rubber spinning at speed against a surface) so dont hang out in one spot very long or you could pontentially damage the finish underneath the letters. It is the easiest and least time consuming method I know to do it.

I used my wife's hair drier. Just heat up one number/letter, peel up a corner and pull the number off. The state sticker took more work as that has a different (and better) adhesive. ;)

Eraser from NAPA (used for removing pin stripes) or a hair dryer. PLEASE avoid the metal razor blade which can slice the gel coat..... some parts stores sell plastic razors for body work.

Remove the remaining glue with goo gone or sone solvent.
