I need to chang out my water pump and I can not get the lower unit off.
all the bolts are out, but it looks like it is still hanging on to the shift rod. What am I to do about this. I got the jonhson book but it does not go over how to get the rod to disconect from the lower unit to pull it off.

some one told me that I might need to take off my carbs and there is a pin I need to remove under them, I looked but did not see anything.

Any help guys???

I do not know your motor...but is there a water intake screen just above the lower unit? If so, remove the screen and you should see a threaded coupling connecting your shift rod. This must be uncoupled to remove your LU. There is also a small cone shaped "plastic keeper" around the rod that must be removed so the nut will slide off the shift rod.

Look under the carbs at the bell crank, you need to unscrew the attachemnt there and separate the halves then the rod can drop down. It is easier to do if you remove the carbs or at least the lower one, but if you have a swivel attachment you can get in there you do not have to take the carbs off. It is a tight fit.

The "bel crank" is a horizontal bar that tilts back and forth see-saw fashion when you shift gears. The bolt that you have to loosen is the one in the center of that see-saw.

I did mine on my '73 85 which should be the same. I DID NOT have to remove the carbs. It wasn't too big a deal to get at that bolt.

It's easier if you don't take the fulcrum screw all of the way out, but just loosen it enough that you can spread the fingers of the bellcrank at the shift rod end.
